I have hit yet another minor road block on my way to completing 'Boys of Summer', that while not stopping me writing does prevent posting.
I'm running out of song exerpts to use for intros.
I have enough for another two or three chapters, but then comes the idea of fitting them loosely to the chapter content.
So, suggestions? Title, artist, and chorus referencing summer, I still need another, oh ten to fifteen songs, and my memory has given up the ghost on ideas.

Here Is A Suggestion
What about "Summertime Blues" by Eddie Cochran?
Hugs,
Jenn
I'll look it up
Thanks! I'll look the lyrics up later.
Another reason I needed help is without it I'd probably end up with almost nothing but '80s pop, since that's what I tend to think of when I imagine summer music. With suggestions of other people's favorite summer music, though, well, who doesn't like helping the creative process?
There's lot of material in
There's lot of material in Nickleback's works. Especially "Feeling Way Too Damned Good"
"Feelin' Way Too Damn Good"
I missed you so much
That I begged you to fly and see me
You must've broke down
Coz you finally said that you would
But now that you're here
I just feel like I'm constantly dreaming
Coz something's gotta go wrong
Coz I'm feelin' way too damn good
For 48 hours I don't think that we left my hotel room
Should show you the sights
Coz I'm sure that I said that I would
We gotta make love just one last time in the shower
Well something's gotta go wrong
Coz I'm feelin' way too damn good
And it's like, every time I turn around
I fall in love and find my heart face down and
Where it lands is where it should
This time it's like
The two of us should probably start to fight
Coz something's gotta go wrong
Coz I'm feeling way too damn good, oh
Feelin' way too damn good
Sometimes I think best if left in the memory
It's better kept inside than left for good
Lookin' back each time they tried to tell me
Well something's gotta go wrong
Coz I'm feelin' way too damn good
And it's like, every time I turn around
I fall in love and find my heart face down and
Where it lands is where it should
This time it's like
The two of us should probably start to fight
Coz something's gotta go wrong
Coz I'm feeling way too damn good, oh
Feelin' way too damn good
Oh, oh, feelin' way too damn good
I missed you so much
That I begged you to fly and see me
You must've broke down
Coz you finally said that you would
But now that you're here
I just feel like I'm constantly dreaming
Coz something's gotta go wrong
Coz I'm feelin' way too damn good
And it's like, every time I turn around
I fall in love and find my heart face down and
Where it lands is where it should
This time it's like
The two of us should probably start to fight
Coz something's gotta go wrong
Coz I'm feeling way too damn good, oh, oh
Feelin' way too damn good
(I missed you so much
That I begged you to fly and see me)
Feelin' way too damn good
(I missed you so much
That I begged you to fly and see me)
Then there's "Rockstar" and "Saving Me" and "Photograph" and many others.

Sorry, been listening to them. Growly words and singing, but killer lyrics and really good messages in a lot of them.

ultimate summertime song
SUMMERTIME SUMMERTIME by The Jamies:
It’s summertime, summertime, sum-sum-summertime,
Summertime, summertime, sum-sum-summertime,
Summertime, summertime, sum-sum-summertime,
Summertime, summertime, sum-sum-summertime,
Summertime!
Well, shuck them books and throw ’em away.
Say goodbye to dull school days.
Look alive and change your ways.
It’s summertime!
Well, no more studyin’ history,
And no more reading geography,
And no more dull geometry,
Because it’s summertime.
It’s time to head straight for them hills.
It’s time to live and have some thrills.
Come along and have a ball,
A regular free-for-all.
Well, are you comin’ or are you ain’t?
You slowpokes are my one complaint.
Hurry up before I faint.
It’s summertime!
Well, I’m so happy that I could flip.
Oh, how I love to take a trip.
I’m sorry, teachers, but zip your lip,
Because it’s summertime.
Chorus
Well, we’ll go swimmin’ every day.
No time to work, just time to play.
If your folks complain, just say,
“It’s summertime!â€
And every night we’ll have a dance,
’Cause what’s a vacation without romance?
Oh man, this jive has me in a trance,
Because it’s summertime.
Chorus
It’s summertime!
It’s summertime, summertime, sum-sum-summertime,
Summertime, summertime, sum-sum-summertime,
Summertime, summertime, sum-sum-summertime,
Summertime, summertime, sum-sum-summertime,
Summertime!
It’s summertime.

What borders on stupidity?
Canada and Mexico.

What with the crawdads and in particular the cyprus trees ...
this must be down fairly far south like South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, east Texas, Arkansas or such so why not a classic, Summertime for the American Opera Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin?
John in Wauwatosa
P.S. If you want something more recent, how about the song Vacation by the Gogos?
John in Wauwatosa
Have you considered
The classic "Summertime" by George Gershwin (from Porgy & Bess)
Then here are more ideas:
Endless Summer
Many Beach Boys tunes
Jan & Dean
"The Tide is High" Blonde
"Summer Nights" - The musical Greece
"June is Busting Out all over" - Carosel
Etc.
Songs from Quick Web Search
Summertime Blues - There's the original Eddie Cochran version and the much later (and way more entertaining if you like noise and distortion) Blue Cheer cover. Both are available on YouTube. Here is a link to the lyrics: http://www.leoslyrics.com/listlyrics.php?hid=Opn8E%2Bv5NFg%3D .
Hot Fun in the Summertime - Sly and the Family Stone
Summer in the City - the Lovin Spoonfull
School's Out - Alice Cooper
Summertime - Beyonce (different song than Gershwin). Lyrics here: http://www.mp3lyrics.org/b/beyonce-knowles/summertime/
You can easily find the lyrics I haven't provided links to with a web search. There are may other songs out there that a "summer songs" websearch will turn up with a little poking around.
The Rascals had some very bubbly songs. I don't remember if they specifically talked about summer. 'Groovin' and 'It's a beautiful Morning' are good songs to check out.
more or less at random
The following list is based on the results of find /pub/music -name \*summer\* on my music server. My tastes are somewhat eclectic, though.
First, the ones that I thought of before searching:
Janis Joplin (with or without Big Brother & the Holding Company): Summertime
The Doors: Indian Summer
And the rest:
Blue Oyster Cult: This Ain't the Summer of Love (almost certainly inappropriate :-)
Placebo: English Summer Rain
Joe Walsh: Indian Summer (might be a cover of the Morrison tune)
Jimi Hendrix: Long Hot Summer Night
Pink Floyd: Summer '68 (this is off of Atom Heart Mother, so don't count on it sounding at all summery, despite the title)
Bob Dylan: Summer Days (from Love and Theft; I don't recognize it so it's prolly not too impressive)
Joni Mitchell: The Hissing of Summer Lawns
It's a Beautiful Day: Hot Summer Day (I should've remembered this one! definitely summer music)
Stray Cats: Lonely Summer Nights
Abba: uhh, never mind. I don't really have that. No fuckin' Abba!
Joan Baez: Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer (depressing, not really very summery, in my opinion)
Cocteau Twins: Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires (heh ... dunno what you'd *do* with this one, the twins are not 'zackly pop)
Prince: Sex in the Summer (but it's off Emancipation, which is eminently forgettable, and I don't remember it at all)
Dar Williams: The End of the Summer
Great Big Sea: Summer
The Doors: Summer's Almost Gone (hmmm ... actually, this is more summery than Indian Summer, but I didn't remember it off-hand ... and anything by the doors always sounds, to me, a bit like aliens had abducted the band and were transmitting it via brainwaves back to earth ...).
Meat Loaf: You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth/Hot Summer Night (which has "summer" in, but really, "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" is classic summer music).
Amy!
a random-ish sample
try these:
if you need one great line:
summer - modest mouse
this one's my favourite bittersweet song about summer:
still beating - josh ritter
this one's most appropriate, apart from the berlin reference:
pretty boys - veruca salt
and this one's fairly appropriate too:
gatekeeper - feist
who could leave iggy out?
here comes the summer - iggy pop
holland - sufjan stevens
and for two oldies but goodies, for those of us that know the riffs:
velouria - the pixies
summer nights - the smiths
if you want to get really depressed, there's always the last day of summer by the cure:
and finally, for something more contemporary, try a crippling blow, by the killers
not as think as i smart i am
Thanks!
Wow, now That's quick response!
Thanks a lot for all the ideas and suggestions so far, looks like I'm gonna be spending some time music hunting and testing over the next few days!
I should have 26-30 up by the middle or end of next week, muse holding.

Tune Titles
Try a search on Google: "Music Summer Classics"
I got about a gazillion titles, most of which I'd not heard, but, oh well, I'm not into pop very much. OMG I almost forgot, Beach Boys! Search: `Beach Boys Summer Songs`
If you need more, let me know.

In the Summertime—Mungo Jerry
Hi Melanie,
HJow about In the Summertime by Mungo Jerry? It was top of the UK charts for some time back in the late sixties/early seventies.
You can chase right up and touch the sky,
When the weather's
fine
You got women, you got women on your mind.
Have a drink, have a drive
Go out and see what you can find.
If her Daddy's rich, take her out for a meal,
If her Daddy's poor, just do what you feel.
Scoot along the lake, do a town an' then return her twenty five.
When the sun goes down
You can make it, make it good and really fine.
With a fat beat, when her Daddy with a me,
We'll have everybody, but we do as we please.
When the weather's fine, we go fishing or go swimming in the sea,
We're always happy,
Long's we're living in this sound philosophy.
Sing along with us, dee dee dee dee dee
Da da da da da, yeah we're hap-pap-py.
Da da da dee da doo dee da dee da dee da da,
Da da da da da, dee da da dee da da.
When the wind is here, yeah it's party time,
Bring your bottle waggin' back, 'cuz it will soon be summer time.
And we'll signal a cab, we'll go driving or maybe we'll settle down,
If she's rich, if she's nice, bring your friends and we'll all go into town.
In the summer time when the weather is high
You can chase right up and touch the sky,
When the weather's fine
Just a suggestion.

Summer Wind - Sinatra
Although Mungo Jerry's song is about the best -- I also like Summer Wind by Frank Sinatra.
The summer wind came blowin' in
From across the sea
It lingered there to touch your hair
And walk with me
All summer long
we sang a song
And then we strolled that golden sand
Two sweethearts and the summer wind
Like painted kites, those days and nights
They went flying by
The world was new beneath the blue
Umbrella sky
Then softer than a piper man
One day, it called to you
I lost you I lost you to
The summer wind
The autumn wind
And the winter winds
They have come and gone
And still those days
Those lonely days
They go on and on
And guess who’s sigh`s
His lullabies through nights that never end
My fickled friend,
The summer wind
The summer wind warm summer wind
Mmm the summer wind

Bummer in the Summer
by Arthur Lee and LOVE:
Well I remember when you used to look so good
And I did everything that I possibly could for you
We used to ride around all over town
But they're puttin' you down for bein' around with me
But you can go ahead if you want to
'cause I ain't got no papers on you...
In the middle of the summer I had a job bein' a plumber
Just to pass till the fall it was you I wanna ball all day
Ah-we were walkin' along, honey, hand in hand
I'm a-thinkin' of you, mama, when you're thinkin' of another man
But you can go ahead if you want to
'cause I ain't got no papers on you
(No, I don't. I ain't got no papers on mySELF!)
All alone on the bone when I didn't have a home
When I saw the way I was and I knew where I was supposed to be
I was twitchin' so I turned and it's really hard to learn
That everyone I saw was just another part of me
But you can go ahead if you want to
'cause nobody's got no papers on you
(No, babe, it's just a FALSEHOOD!)
What borders on stupidity?
Canada and Mexico.
.
There is always the classical... If ever I would leave you
If ever I would leave you
It wouldn't be in summer.
Seeing you in summer I never would go.
Your hair streaked with sun-light,
Your lips red as flame,
Your face witha lustre
that puts gold to shame!
But if I'd ever leave you,
It couldn't be in autumn.
How I'd leave in autumn I never will know.
I've seen how you sparkle
When fall nips the air.
I know you in autumn
And I must be there.
And could I leave you
running merrily through the snow?
Or on a wintry evening
when you catch the fire's glow?
If ever I would leave you,
How could it be in spring-time?
Knowing how in spring I'm bewitched by you so?
Oh, no! not in spring-time!
Summer, winter or fall!
No, never could I leave you at all!
