I have just watched a DVD of the film 'Girl' by Lukas Dhont, with a phenomenal performance by Victor Polster as Lara a transsexual teenager who wants to be a ballerina. I found it moving, heart rending and uplifting and occasionally humorous. I don't want to spoil the plot but I do recommend you watch it.

It appears that there has been some controversy about it and using a CIS actor to play the main character, I think he plays it very sympathetically and authentically.

I attach a link to a piece from the Guardian which is an interview with the director and two clips, for those able to see them, the first of the film, the second of Nora Monsecour on whose life the film was based.

Fully Agree

I watched that film a few weeks ago and I had exactly the same opinion. I thought the casting of Victor Polster was perfect and his performance was outstanding.

The perpetually offended rises again

The complaints were a true TG girl wasn't the actress. With that line of reasoning, a movie with a killer in it needs to use a killer from prison. Make a movie about the "mob" get a mafia kingpin for the lead. Police movie? Yep we need real policemen. A western? Need real cowboys and cowgirls. Okay that one might not be too hard to fill the roles.
Get the picture? I know most transgender feel they got the short end of the stick but so have a lot of others. Whining because a TG wasn't the lead actress in a movie isn't the debate they should be having. We live in a world of perpetually offended now. If they aren't complaining, people have nothing to talk about. Society has bottomed out as far as I can tell. So few good ones left with a can do attitude and if a mistake is made, it's not everyone else fault.
The short clips of the movie "Girl" was interesting. I might have been a little more enthusiastic about the movie if it had been a transgender cowgirl with lots of beautiful horses. But they didn't ask my opinion. See even I can find something to complain about the movie.
Hugs Angharad, you do understand those people talked funny don't you? I think they were foreigners.

Human nurture

crash's picture

The ancient debate between nature and nurture lives on. We are much more interested in bad news than we are in good. We are much more interested in avoiding ill outcomes than we are in taking advantage of beneficial ones. Maybe that's nature. May be that's nurture. I don't pretend to know. Criticism is more about what you bring to the experience than what you take from it.
