Well I suppose it is technically still winter until Wednesday so this weekends snow shouldn't be such a surprise but even so, 15cm (6") of the white stuff is as much as any of the winter's previous deposits and despite the warnings plenty of peeps have been caught out - again!
I did get to ride yesterday but arrived home encased in ice and snow - the bike too was looking like it'd been to the Arctic rather than Sherwood Forest! But hey ho, Spring is in the air.

Snow, snow and more snow
I was snowed in last night. Trust me to pick a place to stay where the only way out of the village was uphill. 3-4ft of drifting snow blocked the road until late morning. Sigh.
Back home in Hampshire now and it has been snowing for the past two hours.
Can we have Friday's weather back again?

The freezing blast wouldn't let the coastal snow settle here, but has freeze-dried the towels on the line. Spoilt the weekend slightly, but at least I won't be wearing snow when I get to work :)

Did it snow on both sides of the ocean or were all comments from Europe? North America is far enough from Europe to have different weather.

Here in the UK, our climate is basically a maritime one as it is largely influenced by the Gulf Stream. I'm at 51N. See where that is in N. America and you will see how far north it is. Most of the time our winds come from the West or South West and it keeps us pretty warm.
Once you get say East of Berlin, the European Climate is no longer Maritime but Continental.
Every so often a Big High Pressure builds over Norway/Sweden. With High Pressures, the wind rotates clockwise. This means that the air is picked up by the weather system when above the Arctic Circle. At this time of year it is very cold indeed. The air circulates and picks up moisture as it crosses the North Sea. When it meets the warmer air over the UK it either turns to rain or snow. At this time of year, it is snow and lots of it.
IT is really a lot more complicated that that but in simple terms, that's it.

actually at 53.3 degrees north which is further up the globe than all the US except Alaska!
Add in some elevation (Sheffield is built between 29m ASL and 548m ASL!) and there can be huge variations of weather and temperature on this tiny island and within this city even (it is a real city with not one but two Cathedrals to its name!) Where I live is, for example @ 100m higher than the city centre which sits @ 75m ASL - enough that I'm above the snow line and the temperature could be 10c cooler! where I go riding can be up to 525m ASL - doesn't sound much but the weather up there is distinctly wild. one reason for this is, as anyone who paid attention in geography would know, this is the first ground above 200m west of the Russian Ural mountains some 3600km away so those icy Siberian winds have nothing to stop them! We are very aware here that easterlies during the winter will bring cold weather!
