...and seen the hundreds, if not thousands, of images there. Surely some of those must be copyright free?

I've also found hundreds, but free ones are hard to find.

And then I saw the word "free."
Search google for the term "creative commons" that's your best source. There are a bunch of different websites that offer free pictures, and you might be able to find one that way.

Yes, I do. Search for "vintage wedding dress" or "1960 wedding dress" at pixabay.com, www.pexels.com, unsplash.com, www.gettyimages.ca/creative-images/royaltyfree, burst.shopify.com/free-images or any of the web sites mentioned in http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-websites-for-free-stock-p...
I just checked. Some of them have a large number of really nice pictures that look like they may be from the 1960s. Have fun.
