When I think of British Teas Earl Grey or English Breakfast are the ones I think of.Today I was shopping at a local closeout store and spotted P&G tea.On the box they claim they are the most popular Tea in England.So I was wondering if that claim was true.I won't say it was the best tea I ever drank but it was a far cry from the worst.Amy

Yes, it's popular, mainly, I think because they ran a long series of adverts on TV back in the 60s 70s and 80s showing a chimpanzee's tea party and the chimps were drinking PG. Natch!

and watched the commercial.It was pretty funny but I noticed that the cups that the chimps were drinking from had red roses on them.I was wondering if maybe that was a dig at red rose tea.Thanks for answering Gaby and thanks for the link Laika.Amy

Mostly harmless
PG Tips is fairly inoffensive, it carries a picture of Indian tea pickers on the carton but there's very little Indian tea in it any more, it's mostly African and there aren't many tips in it either. It's blended to always taste the same. The same goes for all the major tea brands over here, the only variation is to put even more African tea in to make a stronger infusion.
There are thousands of teas
once you get beyond the big companies. In Bath there is a little place which will blend teas for you from a whole plethora of choice. Having said that, most of the time I use bog standard tea bags from Tetley or Typhoo - so Earl Grey or his Missus, or a bit of China or Darjeeling is a treat.

This witty rejoinder, which was the punch line of one of the PG tips chimp adverts when the poor animals were dressed as Tour de France riders, became the bane of our tandem riding (even worse than 'She's not pedalling').
It didn't affect my tea drinking (you can't drink less than zero) but SWMBO never touched the stuff. She's an avid Earl Grey drinker anyway to the extent that friends keep a special teapot just for her so that the taste doesn't spoil the flavour of their Yorkshire.

Given a choice
I'd go for Yorkshire tea or Lipton's English Breakfast but Sainsburys or Asda (both UK supermarkets) are close to my home and their teas are good enough for me. I have friends who will drink only Earl Grey or Darjeeling but I'm not keen on them.
I don't drink tea as often as I used to and manage only one or two cups a day so I'm not what you'd call a discerning tea drinker.

An Aussie visiting London and in need of a cuppa enters a high-falutin' tea house and asks for a pot of tea. A rather snobbish waiter looks down his nose at the potential customer and says:-
"Which kind would sir like? We have Princess Anne tea, which is 25% body and 75% aroma, Prince Charles tea, which is 75% body and 25% aroma or Duchess Camilla tea (you'll never believe this) which is 50/50 and very very popular."
