Safe to Play Prologue

Printer-friendly version

Sometimes I wonder why I was ever conceived. Growing up in a family with a highly successful sister and only your mother for your parent, I was expected to be the man of the house. Growing up I tried every sport imaginable but failed at everything. I finally gave up even trying to play sports upon finishing Elementary school. I still went to games and what not after that but I relegated myself to watching rather than playing. In my second year of middle school my mother started dating again and it just so happens that he used to be a pretty good pitcher in High School and College.

My friends had been nagging me to try sports again saying that I didn’t give them a chance and just gave up after one year. So over the next year I work on becoming a Pitcher and Shortstop for Baseball. As a Pitcher I have a pretty good set of Pitches that I can use. As a Shortstop It turns out that I have a cannon of an arm that I didn’t know I had. So my 3rd year of middle school I went out for baseball and to my surprise I became the Ace pitcher and 2nd string Shortstop.

That season my team had a dream season, We went undefeated in the Regular Season and went on to the National Tournament for Middle Schools(I’ll think of a better name later). The way the tournament works is similar to the European Soccer tournaments the Champions League and Europa League. If you’re a top school from your state you get invited to the Premier League but if you get invited as a Wild Card team you have to go through a playoff so to speak. 4 round playoff and the two teams in the last game get a spot in the group play. The Second Tier competition is called the Dark Horse League. If you win this competition you get an auto invite to the next year's Premier League.

That brings us to what my team ended up doing in the tournament. We got into the Premier League as a Wild Card and swept the 4 Round Playoff with ease. In Group Play we got what most people would call the “Group of Death” The hardest group to get through so to speak. In our group we had last year's PL Winner, last year’s DHL winner and a Perennial PL team from California. All the media predicted us to get blown off the face of the map against these teams in our group but to their surprise We kept our unbeaten season going throughout the group stage. We Shutout last year's PL winners on a near no hit performance from me on the mound. Last years DHL winner gave us our first challenge of the season as they had a monster pitching rotation but once we got in our groove there was no stopping us.

The team from California gave us little issue as we swept both games with them.

After 6 group stage games we came out on top of our so called “Group of Death” unscathed and we sat at 40-0 on the season.

Knockout play was next and to say we got lucky would be an understatement. The top 3 teams from last years PL all got upset in their first game and we dispatched our opponents handily 10-1 .

We had everything going for us at this point to win the whole thing. The only teams that would have given us any problems are out early and now the media is all over us saying that we have the highest chance of winning out of who is left.

The second Knockout game was a thriller that we won in 8 innings by a score of 10-9

Things got hard in the next game as we had a defensive battle on our hands that I ended up winning for us on a Walk off Homerun to win 1-0

The PL Finals were set at that point. Two undefeated teams going head to head. My team saved my pitching for this game and I knew I had to be at my best against a team like this. This game was a Pitching masterpiece. I outlasted their Ace by an Inning and we took advantage that inning their ace left getting 6 runs in that inning.

We shut them down the rest of the way and it was glorious. Winning this tournament in our first appearance gave us a lot of national attention. No one gave us any chance to do anything and here we were winning the whole thing.

Upon coming home from the tournament I was informed by my parents that I had several schools interested in me for High School but I told them I won’t be going to a Private school because my teammates and I all agreed to go to the Public school and make it a better place again.

In the offseason all the pitchers from the team got together with a Pitching Coach and worked on everything we needed to to get ready for next spring.

In my own time away from the team I worked on my skills as a Shortstop and Batter. My throwing arm is much more accurate than it was during the season. I’m also a much better batter than I’ve ever been.

High School is always a tough ride for any kid coming in as a Freshmen.

I'm doing great in my studies and I’m working with the high school coaches who see me as the future star of the school and don’t want to rush me or my old teammates into the spotlight.

The coach said I’m probably good enough to play Varsity as a Freshman but he wants to save us for when the Upperclassmen leave.

Unfortunately for the coaches they had to call me up after Injuries hit their infield and they needed a Shortstop.

That brings me to the beginning of my Tale. My journey will be long and hard.

Author Notes: This will have TG Elements once the actual story starts but I wanted to lay out the backstory behind the main character and bridge the story so I don't confuse anyone.

This story has been in the works for a while and I expect the first chapter to be out Sometime next week.

Looks to be an interesting

Looks to be an interesting story. Wondering if we will be seeing a girl as the star shortstop? Or even the star Pitcher?

Who's on first?

Just a info tidbit, Shortstop has the longest throws in the infield. 2nd base has the shortest. Having a pitcher's arm at SS is a plus.
