For those of you who deign to read my blog, you may remember how I was having trouble getting to file share between my Laptop and my Desktop computers. I'm not much into cloud services so I passed on that suggestion.
However, poking around on my Lenovo Y700 I discovered a program called "REACHit" It purported give you access to files on all your devices on your local network without using the internet.
It's a Lenovo free download, and since I already had it on my Laptop, I downloaded it on my Desktop and after a bit of poking around (documentation is sparse) I managed to get the two to actually share files. I can actually open a file on one computer from the other. I'm not sure just yet about modifying and saving, but I'll play with that.
There's an apparently a companion program called "SHAREit" that is supposed to share files with other devices in the same way, so maybe I'll have to use that to over write the file on the other computer; we'll see.

Am I missing something here, because while Windows File Sharing is a clusterfuck and then some, it has loads of documentation and does work. Eventually.

Home groups
See my original blog entry on this subject. I worked through all of the advise and the best I could do was to get both computers to acknowledge that the other existed but not actually access the other one.
I was under the impression that I could set up a home group for my home network. I went through several attempts at setting up a home group for my two computers and then was told that home groups doesn't work for the free up grade to Windows 10. You have to up grade to Windows 10 Pro. I'm not interested in paying for the right to pay monthly for my operating system.
I didn't try the NAS device that was suggested, since my wife was already blanching at the fact I bought a print server so I could use my USB printer from either machine without physically moving the cable from machine to machine, and have yet to make it work on both machines.
As I said, Lenovo supplied REACHit and SHAREit so I gave it a try and so far, I'm loving it.

I have the free Win 10 and am
I have the free Win 10 and am using Windows based share, with no add on programs. I have no problem sharing files between computers.
Left Click on a folder you want to share ( I recommend the base user folder)
Properties (all the way at the bottom)
Sharing tab
Click the share button
And you should be able at access that folder on the network
The problem with Windows File Share
are legendary and documented all over the internet.
If you never ever take the laptop out of your home and connect it to another network then you should be ok.
But if you do then beware leaving that share enabled. You never know who is trying to steal stuff from your laptop.
The same goes for letting others connect to your home network.
To be honest, in this day and age, leaving a share open is just silly.
There are plenty of alternatives that are far more secure.
A home NAS (password protected of course) is what I've done.
Dropbox can work but it relies on you having a network connection 100% of the time. Sods law will apply and the network will be down just when you want to share something.
At the end of the day, you should do what works best for you once you know all the positives and negatives of each possible solution.

Have you considered Dropbox?
It's free, installs fairly easily, and I was able to install it on iPhones, iPads, a Macbook, and Windows 7 machines and use it to share between all of them. Although it does make use of the "cloud" if you're just using it to move files from one device to another and not store the file long term it has worked well for me (it does use network bandwidth. If you're sending text type files no problem. Something like video can affect your monthly data usage with your ISP). As someone else said, Windows networking and file sharing if you're willing to put up with the pain of configuration (I've got it between the Windows and the OS-X machines but it won't work on the IOS devices). I also have a router that has a USB port that I have a hard drive connected to that is reachable from all the devices on the network. This seems to be reasonably common on the more recent routers and isn't terribly difficult to configure.
USB drives?
What about USB drives? They have the advantage that you also have a backup of your files.
That's how I've been transferring files between my two Windoze computers.
There's also FTP to/from my Linux box, but the nice thing about USB sticks is that I don't have to have a network cable handy.
