The rumors of my death are greatly exaggerated…

A lot of niggling little health issues have kept me away for about 19 months, but, I’ve dodged the major problems that often come with age: Heart, cancer, stroke, and diabetes have so far passed me by… So far.

What I’ve discovered is; Getting older ain't for wimps.
In Feb of 2014 I had all my lower teeth extracted after 4 abscesses that had caused constant sinus infections for 2 years. The dentist: “Gee, I never noticed that before but I don’t think teeth would cause that…” In the last 19months I only had 1 sinus infection.

I've now had 3 surgeries on each eye and can finally see perfectly. I'm so happy!!!

Many of you know I have ADHD and for many years have taken Strattera, the only non-stimulant med. for this condition. It's also the only drug approved for use by middle aged and older adults. My insurance company decided in January (only in the cause of cheapness) that they would no longer pay for it and told me they would only pay for a med. approved only for children, teens, and young adults, which is a form of speed.

In what fantasy world that seemed like a good idea for a 71 year old with a history of Essential Hypertension, I have no clue! After only 19 days my blood pressure was sky high with the top number approaching 200. I was confused and suffering from lack of balance. I lost all feeling in my hands and feet (Peripheral Neuropathy) and the circulation was impaired to the point that my extremities were freezing cold to the touch (Renaud's Syndrome).

The sad part is that these are all known effects of the drug they insisted on!!! 2 hours after a phone call from me, in which I accused them of elder abuse and threatened a law suit, I was called by my pharmacy to tell me I had a prescription of Strattera which was pre-approved for the next 3 years.

Within 4 days of taking it all symptoms were relieved, EXCEPT, I still had no feeling or circulation in my right hand. It felt like the whole hand was being shocked; like sticking your finger in a light socket. Seems there was a preexisting condition of Carpal Tunnel which had never manifested but was exacerbated by the ill-chosen med. After messing about for a few months with steroids and therapy while things got worse I contacted an excellent hand surgeon, who I knew through medical associations and other surgeons, and made an appointment. He operated 6 days later, and though he told me that healing would be slow due to my age, he released me in just 5 weeks saying I was way ahead of the curve.

I still have tingling in the tips of 3 of 4 fingers served by the median nerve in my right, dominant, hand but I can feel textures again with the pads. Due to nerve regeneration one finger is entirely symptom free.

In July I had all my upper teeth extracted. I came from a time when there was no fluoride in the water, and we had well water till I was 21. I’ve had tooth problems since I was a child despite brushing, flossing, and mouthwash. They were always a source of pain and infection. I love the dentures! I have more teeth to chew with and they’re all mine; I paid for ‘em!!!

Then a week ago I found that my PSA had doubled in the last 9 months. If it’s not one thing, it’s something else. Geez…

So for awhile there, I couldn’t see well, or feel my fingers to type, so I haven’t been around much. But hey, I’m baa-aack...

Your health is too important to trust to insurance companies, they just want money and really don't care about you. Your doctor or dentist probably does care but she or her minions may not have the same sense of urgency that you have: They're treating 100s of patients. YOU HAVE THE ULTIMATE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTHCARE!

If your doctor won't let you be involved, find a new one.

However, right now, I feel great, and I can read and type. So I intend to be around a lot more.

Life is good and beautiful…

I wanted you all to know I'm still alive and love you all!

You got better??!?

Is it possible that maybe you died but got better? It is possible that you got put on the "bring out your dead" cart and then fell off. :)

Actually, glad to see that you are doing better. And yes, Insurance Co's tend to be run by Bean Counters.

Thank you, Brianna,

yes, I did get better, but I don't think I died... I would have noticed. 'Course, maybe I did and God threw me back!

I am glad you are back

and your health is better. Life indeed is good and beautiful, but growing old isn't easy. I have fought it hard every step of the way.

Don't let someone else talk you out of your dreams. How can we have dreams come true, if we have no dreams?

Hi, Stormy,

Glad to be back! Remember, I said "older". I refuse to be old... After all, I'm still18 between my ears.

So glad

Ole, my friend. I am so glad to hear from you. Last I heard your vision was so poor that even reading was a chore. That was before all the rest you just told us about.

I agree, getting older isn't for wimps. I'm only one year behind you and because when I was younger, I didn't believe I'd make it to senior citizen status, I didn't plan my retirement well and I'm still working.

I got my dentures 25 or so years ago and couldn't be happier with my teeth. Like you I've had trouble with my teeth from an early age. Mine was simply because while I was taught to brush my teeth, no one ever told me about flossing until after I developed gingivitis. After having my dental work brought up to snuff by a very competent dentist who assured me that he had filled every single cavity, within three months I broke a molar eating peanuts. I had developed a gum line cavity that undermined an already filled tooth and it just broke in half.

I decided then to get dentures. I went to a denturist to give him a heads up as to what he had to work with and he recommended I go to a dental surgeon. $ 1900 later, I was minus 26 teeth, two wisdom teeth having been extracted previously. Per the surgeon's recommendation, I waited a month before seeing the denturist to fit my dentures. 25 years later, I'm still using the original set which have never even been relined and I don't use adhesive. I can eat apples, corn on the cob and what really great... I can chew ice without any pain. ;o)

Good you back.

Hugs
Patricia

and to be able to read you words My dentist, of course recommended a mouth full of implants and thought he could give me a deal for only about $180,000... Yeah! Right! the dentures are just fine and work better than my "real" teeth; mostly crowns, fillings, and a 6 tooth bridge right in front. I have no intention of sending his kids to college!

It's great to be back!!!

I missed every one and there are a lot of people here that I feel very close to: they are like family to me. I'm still monitoring that PSA of course but I feel great and I can READ and TYPE!

God bless you, Andrea,

DSC_0010.jpgOK, Ole, so glad you're back. Did you know that tooth problems double your chances of heart attack? So you're probably much better off without them. Although my son the endodontist always tries his hardest to save them (provided he can keep them healthy).

Our health insurance in Australia is more benign than yours (I think) and if a doctor prescribes a particular medicine that is what you get. The insurers cannot change it at their whim.

I know you love your garden and flowers so I'm very happy for you that your sight is now fine....let alone for reading, and (sigh) I know all about essential tremor. As you say, getting old is not for the faint-hearted, and I'm still a couple of years ahead of you, not like those pop-stars (or Caitlyn Jenner) who seem to age at half the rate of we mere mortals.

Just take care of yourself. We can't afford to lose you!

Joanne, You look "Mahvelous".

I hope that you and all my other friends who have my real name and email will contact me there too. I miss our long conversations. If you no longer have it, or if you want it, PM me.

I love your picture and long for that kind of freedom.

I look forward to conversing at greater length...

I held off...

I appreciate you're back, and hope that things are better for you in the long run.

The part I can't resist - know any good Ole and Lena jokes?

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

Thank you, Dear Friend,

I'm thrilled that I can finally return. I had to let go of my medical and legal editing business and while I enjoyed it greatly, I think I'll stay away: I turned down a job last week. What I would like to do is more of my autobiography and more fiction to stimulate my creative juices.

Thanks for making me feel welcome again.

Glad you're back and in better health. (Also agree about your compliment to Joanne - she looks stunning! Jealous :) I am! xx
