.... I was reading ' Shit Happens, But So Do Miracles! by Tanya Allan ' as there are some similarities.
It begins at a boarding school for boys in the UK, the main character goes to bed feeling ill, and wakes up the next morning female.
S/He enlists best friend at the school to help with escape, the runs away to Glasgow or Edinburgh, I think parents wouldn't accept change or might be that character believes this to be the case.
If I'm not mixing stories up while in NYC She meets a shy guy they take a trip through Central Park in horse drawn carriage.
He moves to UK and becomes a teacher of either Literature or Art (I think, definitely a teacher), at Her school.

Going with what I laughingly call my memory, and the description at http://tanyaallan.authorshaunt.com/stories.php, I would guess the story is Weird Wednesday, and I thank you for prodding me to re-read old favourites.

I think you may have mixed up several stories by Tanya Allen here. The New York carriage ride comes from 'Twisted Dreams' and the other part comes from either 'Monique' or 'Emma' I believe. Hope this helps.

History of TA stories
The first part of your "memory" was posted by TA in 2012 and was titled "Dreamer." It was a rediscovered story TA had written when a teenager in 1972. It was her first TG story and was not originally intended to be published. She made some minor editing changes and posted the story in 2012. The second part of your "memory" was, as someone has previously stated, from the TA story "Twisted Dreams." Hope this helps.
