My first time.

Blog About:

When I was younger, in 3rd grade or so, I stumbled across a book in the school library. "There's a girl in the boys bathroom" or something along those lines. It was about a boy who turns into a girl by kissing his elbow. I absolutely adored this book and like every naive 3rd grader accepted it for nonfiction. I tried for weeks to kiss my elbow , every chance I got I was trying, in the bathroom, in the shower, at walmart, on the playground. I damn near dislocated my shoulder one time by trying to use the ceiling fan... but this was my first real attempt at becoming a girl and actualy what set things in motion. If I hadn't gone to the hospital for almost breaking my arm in a fan I may have never told my mother that I wanted to be a girl, may have never went to live with my dad or gotten the proper therapy, treatment, or support. I may very well have killed my self by now. It's amazing how one single thing can change your whole life for better or worse.

Anyway, this little memory just popped into my head and I thought I would share :3

It's funny

how a relatively unimportant event can lead to life changing experiences. The important thing now is you know where you're going and what you need to do to get there. Good luck on your journey, it started earlier than mine, I was 25 when I decided what I needed to do and even then, I delayed it by a few more years before I took the leap of faith.

Two Possibilities

There are two that come to mind; the most obvious would be "There's A Boy in the Girls' Bathroom", by Louis Sachar, published in 1988 and has received several awards.

Another candidate might be Todd Strasser; he wrote over 120 YA novels, many withe the title, "Help! I'm Trapped In ..." and then whatever body they were trapped in. Strasser's books can be found in most libraries, including school libraries.

Most of these were kid-to-grownup, usually male-to-male, as "...Trapped In My Principal's Body" or even "...Trapped in Santa's Body". There are some that are switched genders, such as, "Help! I'm Trapped In A Supermodel's Body" and "Help! I'm Trapped In My Sister's Body". The second one was originally published in 1997. Here's a grouped page on Amazon:

maybe.

I think it may be the first one that sounds like it. It was a fairly small book.

Maybe one of these?

Is He a Girl? (Marvin Redpost Series #3)
by Louis Sachar, Barbara Sullivan (Illustrator)

The Little Girl Who Kissed Her Elbow
By Conrad D. Bollinger

Black Boy by Richard Wright

All 3.

All three are on Amazon.

"There's A Boy in the Girls' Bathroom" seems to be the only one of some actual length the others are shorts. It also seems to be well know one and commonly used in school reading programs, there is even a teaching guide to go along with it.

Note:
All Three have some negative comments due to "the inappropriateness of a book for children about a boy becoming a girl", I guess some will always think that way. :(
However, "There's A Boy in the Girls' Bathroom" has quite a lot of overwhelmingly good reviews.

PS. I am probably going to get it my self.

sounds familiar

The book you described sounds like

Marvin Redpost: Is He a Girl - - by Louis Sachar

The book is at a second grade reading level, so an easy chapter book for a 3rd grader. It is about a boy who is told that if he kisses his elbow he will turn into a girl. When he does end up doing it, he starts to believe he is turning into a girl. Kids love this book. Although it is not the first one in the Marvin Redpost series, I often recommend they read this one first, for if they do they will want to read the rest of the Marvin Redpost books (not always the case if they actually read book number one in the seriers first).

Memories from our youth - - they can be odd at times. :)

YES!

Thats definitly the one, I always remembered the cover and its of a boy in a bathroom staring at a mirror and the reflection is of a girl. I can see where I got confused with the title. I just read the first few pages on amazon and thats definitly the one.
