Well, a surprise yesterday, with an e-mail at work sent to my male name from someone I used to work with many, many years ago (80s). In summary, "Hi, remember me? Living back in Abergwaun* now, someone from Dover says you are writing books now, how you doing? I was in a writing group, any tips?"
[My reply]
"Oh! Astonishing! But hey, no problem. Can we talk about writing? I think I'll buy your books"
Conversation massively trimmed, but it sums up what I try to push in my stories: the world holds a lot of arseholes, but an awful lot more decent, accepting, lovely people.

I will agree that there are some loving, helpful people out there and things are getting better Steph. Though as you say, there are still some arseholes out there and plenty of us have met plenty of them.
