I too have checked some boxes, but now I'm assuming that all the notifications are Email. I'm not a regular Email checker, and I choose not to receive any Email from this site anyway. My subscription needs have long been served mostly by my Track page, which alerts me to new comments on anything on which I have left a comment myself.
Editing
I had to edit my subscriptions (from the 'notifications' tab on my 'my account') to send them out via email. I think the default is web (not entirely sure what that entails) and you can also set it to send you a pm on the site.

I think that's a somewhat harsh characterization. Buttons were always said to be a test. Erin and the admins need to be able to test new features on the site. If they don't work out, it's a learning experience, not a debacle.

Personally...
I haven't had a need to start using them yet, since I'm still catching up on a bunch of stories I'm behind on.
However, they could be invaluable for getting notified of updates from irregularly updated stories / new stories by authors with an irregular schedule / new stories in a universe you're following (hopefully DRU isn't heading the same way as CRU / The Center!)...
As the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, then only left-handers are in their right mind!
I still have not tested them.
I really should, I just have not stopped to figure out what they do and in what way. I have way to many bookmarks. Or at times make comments just as a way to track it, when I am not real sure what to say but like the story. I am way past starting to loose track of stuff. lol
