I really don't know much about poetry, but I wrote this at time of darkness in my life. The love and understanding of my partner helped me through it and pulled me out my dark thoughts.
The darkness of the night
Seems deeper still
When the only things around you
Are memories of the light.
Feelings of fear and confusion
Fed by darkness abounding
Turn into insecurities
Love is an illusion.
Slivers of light pierce the darkness above
A hand reaching down searches for contact
It pulls you up tender and cautious
You float in the air as light as a dove.
Bright light hurts your eyes as it touches your face
You cringe from the pain and try to pull away
Gentle arms engulf you holding you fast
Whispering words of love as you’re embraced.
The darkness of the night
Is driven back
When the feelings that surround you
Are full of love and light.

Or, in even shorter form...
Love, friendship, family. It is what I believe in, and what I try to write.
You may not know that much
You may not know that much about poetry, but you know how to write it.
Perversely, this piece reminded me of perhaps the darkest song this band ever recorded.

In silence and darkness
Hold each other near tonight
For will it last forever?
Love can be the most destructive emotion of all...
