Minnesota Same-Sex Marriage Bill Signed into Law

Governor Mark Dayton signed into law today a bill passed by the Minnesota Legislature authorizing marriage between partners of the same sex. The law takes effect August 1st.

The bill had been controversial with a few legislators from both the majority and minority parties crossing party lines for the final votes in the House and Senate. Earlier, Minnesota voters had rejected a proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage in the general election of November 2012.

This law makes Minnesota the twelfth state approving same-sex marriage.
