Last week's New Scientist had a special issue on "The Self", and one of the subjects it tackles is the way the mind human scopes out the extent of our own bodies. They cite an experiment in which the subject's own hand is obscured, and an artificial hand placed in front of them. When the two hands are simultaneously stroked, the sub-conscious mind decides that the visible, artificial hand is part of its own body. Even though the subject consciously knows the hand is false, s/he experiences stress if the artificial hand is threatened.
I find this of particular interest because nearly all my fictional stories include artificial breasts (called Bustlets), which incorporate a feature I call Sensotouch. With the use of touch-sensitive membranes, such as those used in smart phones and tablets, feeling is transferred from the outer skin of the breast to electrodes on the skin of the user, causing the user to 'feel' the breast as if it was his own (it's usually a male who wears these). The Hiplet, with its artificial vagina works in a similar way.
It seems that my stories predicted the results of the real life scientific experiments. Perhaps now, we might see some manufacturers attempting to include Sensotouch into their artificial breasts. I can't wait!

I saw an experiment ...
... on a TV science programme with the artificial hand as you describe. The experiment ended when the person conducting it suddenly produced a big hammer and bashed the artificial hand with it. The subject reacted as if his own hand had been hit which was both interesting and quite funny. So you may be right - Bustlets and Hiplets just around the corner. Alas a bit too late for me :)

Never too late!
You don't know Robbi.
Just imagine having the artificial likeness of an 18-year old beautiful woman grafted onto your own skin. You look at yourself in the mirror, and the sub-conscious you says, "I'm an 18-year old beautiful woman!"
Suddenly, you'll be dancing the night away, and becoming the prime goal scorer in the netball team.
Sounds good to me.

"Is that scary? Good! We like that!"
Over in the US, some staff members on the Ellen show were also subjected to the experiment last year, as well as on the show itself.
As the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, then only left-handers are in their right mind!
Incredibly impressive
Thanks mittfh
Those three videos are incredibly impressive. I hadn't realised these experiments had been going on this long.
I think there's great opportunity if only someone can build a practical model of my Sensotouch Bustlets and Hiplets - perhaps even a whole body suit.

Although....
...hopefully any real life version won't come with two separate pots of adhesive: one for short-term use, one for long-term use... :P
Then again, without the confusion between the two pots, a major plot element of your stories would disappear...

Sensotouch was incorporated
into the Bionic Man and Bionic Woman Television series. Now, when artificial limbs can actualy look, feel, and act like the real thing, it'll a triumph! :-)
