The British Rail-run Sealink ferry that would have made the crossing to the Isle of Wight in 1979. The journey took 45 minutes, long enough to relax on deck with a pint. These days the new catamarans whisk you over in a third of that time, but it's nowhere near as enjoyable an experience.
Of course if you're in a real hurry there's always the hovercraft. Ryde to Southsea beach in 7 minutes. Brilliant until you hit a wave...

Thats not a martello tower but a palmerston fort according to what wiki says.
I liked the pic you posted so much I looked into it. Sorry.
There is also WWII navel forts around there somewhere mostly made of iron and way smaller.
I could be wrong but that ferry looks like one built by harland and wolf with the outer wings aside the bridge. The design itself is actually a remenant of the tanic trio incase your wondering.

In fact this is the second time I've been caught out with those pesky things. In the first version of the story I said they were built during the Napoleonic wars. As for the ferry, all I remember is that they used to sell beer and now they don't. That's progress for you.
