A sad thing for me, just an hour or or two before the shooting started in CT, an 18 year old high school senior was arrested in my home town for plotting to trap the other students in the school auditorium and start shooting them, as many as he could. This was in the town I grew up in, the school I attended! He was caught because he was trying to get a couple of other teens to assist him, and at least one of them took his plan to the school officials. He also planned to set bombs at the entrances so he could blow up the police as they tried to enter the school.

This has been a fucked-up weekend. I don't know whether to cry or pull the covers over my head and hope this will all be gone when I wake up.

Oh dear.
At least they caught the purr-p before he could cause a cat-astrophe.
Know how you feel, Karen J . But please
keep up the hope that all of this stupidity will soon be over after the New Year.
May Your Light Forever Shine
There is something very wrong
with current society, it grows more violent by the day.

I'm sorry...
...it's not stupidity, and it won't be going away any time soon. It is evil and it is going to be around for a long time; no matter what the means and motive of destruction. But for the timely intervention of the right people, Karen's hometown would have been visited upon by the very same evil anger that hurt the community in Connecticut.
I know that I cannot know what you, Karen, are going through. I can only imagine with little success how I would feel if someone here in my hometown was nearly able to duplicate the horror that the people in Connecticut must now deal with. I am glad and relieved that someone was able to stop that from happening again, and I can only hope and pray that it doesn't happen again. But I know that it will, and that is both frightening and sad. And perhaps that is where I might come to understand how you feel. Thank you.
Love, Andrea Lena
Look for a positive
At times looking for the positive helps. Someone was brave/smart/ethical/moral/intelligent (you choose the adjective) to do the right thing. Not only did they not join in the lunacy, but they notified the proper authorities, which stopped this. In many of the similar tragedies that have occurred from Columbine onward, there was some evidence that the perpertrator was to put it mildly in need of help. The help never came or the person who could have taken some action to take prevent it, failed to act or report suspicions to a higher level. We don't have enough info yet on Adam Lanza but the early indications are there.

We Can't Hide!
Evil is always with us. It is our response that counts.
Two quoted from Edmund Burke:
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.â€
“Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little.â€
We can't hide. We must right the wrongs, even it is a little in one area. We must be the leaders.
Earlier this year I gave an example of someone doing Tikun Olom. Mrs. Kor may be changing the world.
as long as we don't wish to stop it, it won't be stopped
The US is very willing to erode all sorts of freedoms in order to promote social goals. So, we cannot buy liquor until age 21. In my state, MN, I cannot purchase liquor on Sunday. The US bans or punishes certain kinds of speech, libel and child-porn are the best examples. Through the broad extension of copyright we grant monopolies to some publishers.
We need to think creatively about stopping these mass shootings. We have made the 2nd amendment into some kind of idol. I am not saying we need to ban all guns but we need to figure out a way of stopping mental defectives from easily getting access.
