I'm curious about the "more like this" function. Is it done automatically, or does an administrator do it? How does it decide what pieces are like the newly published piece?

It's compiled by the search server. It's a live search result based on Tags used, related tags, and of course the author and content type.
We used to have it also use the Title of the posting, but then the "more like this" was always full of multi part stories and since the book module already does a good job at that, we turned that off.
We can bias any field to be more or less relevant as needed, but haven't felt the need to tweak it for a while.

can you incorporate the kudos or 'favorite' functions?
Are those db fields you can automagic as well? Or is it just metadata?

Solr and Kudos
The current schema we use, does not index kudos or marked as favorite as something available to the Solr Search Index which is what the "more like this" uses to compile it's results.
Honestly, I don't think we do any kind of tracking for how many users have marked a certain story as a favorite. Not entirely sure it's even sure based on how it's implemented.
