I know everyone loves putting up stories and getting comments and input. But with over 12 new stories available a night that always leaves other author's stuff to be further pushed down the page and possibly unread. I have talked to Erin about this, but wonder what others think; I wonder, in the sake of fairness, we limit postings of new stories to one per day per author. This would allow others to stay near the top of the page longer and give readers time to get acquainted to lesser known authors.

For my vote I am against the limitation
Episodes of series are often further behind than we would wish. This would delay many of them for anuneccary length of time. As an alternative I would support a larger front page.
Just my prefererance.

Sorry Thera, but I think you're wrong.
I think Littlekatie has a good point, and I don't think it will stop authors stories being posted, but it will slow down the number of authors playing this weird game of seeing how many times they can get there name up on the list in a single day. I do think it gets a bit silly at times with the number of stories one author can post in a single day, it would make more sense to spread out the posting of them to give the reader more time to enjoy each story. Angharad posts once a day with Bike without any problems.

And tell me how many of Bailey's (just for an example) stories we simply would not see at all. There are some who post more than three hundred and sixty five a year. How does "limiting" cope with that?
So, by all means have a different opinion than mine. That is a right I would not deny anyone. But I think that this has not been thought through well enough. It means that much cannot ever be published. Censorship or self censorship would be required if those rules are to be followed.
So I do not think your idea works on a purely pragmatic basis and its flaws would need addressing before implementation.
So how do you propose to avoid the fact of limiting the output of estimable prolific authors?

What little Katie is asking is that there be a way that someone who posts once a week will still be seen on the front page when someone logs in. I valid arguement.
What Little Katie is implying is that the FREEDOM of people be taken away by the admins. This is what people will try to prevent.
For those that write in bunches *like myself* this is pretty much an insult and it really hurts our feelings.
On the opposite side we have those who write once a week/month and spend many hours working on their art piece. By denying them the chance to show their art to their satisifaction they are also being insulted and hurt.
Instead of arguing and trying to get admins to watch over us like children lets be adults and come up with a working solution that everyone can agree on.
Or we can do the childish thing and go with *BUT MY PIECE IS BETTER THAN HERS MOMMY! stick tongue out at other person*
Personally I like people to read my stories. Some of them are expressions of my feelings at the time. It helps me on a day to day basis.
My idea is something something that lists authors and the number of stories for that month/week.
Ie Tels (5) under the heading of new stories this month Leaves plenty of room for many other names to be listed on the front page. The next day it could read Tels (7) and would not knock anyone off the front page.
I think the current system works fine
I think if something isn't broken, then don't fix it. There are so many times that the list fills up with new stories perfectly fine, that trying to fix it just because a writer has not been able to post their work for a couple of days due to real life, or the fact they were busy working on a story that their muse wouldn't let them step away to post another one, would be a waste of time.
Maybe i should have said I understand the point littlekatie was trying to make, and ot that I agreed with her. The point I was trying to mkae with Thera, was that I think an author could post once a day and not effect the posting of a long running story.
I'm sorry to Bailey, Tels and anyother author my comment might have upset.

I can understand how people want thier stuff read and how other authors may suddenly publish alot at times. However the authors who publish alot will also have tiems where they do not publish anything.
The question is how do you make things fair for all. You can't. EVERYONE wants their stories read by all. So what then a bigger list visiable? No listing unless they click a link?
Maybe a list of authors with active stories in last X days?
I think listing the authors would allow more uh room for people to read. One author could post once a week and have the same visibility as the author posting 2 times a day.
I am not saying its the best idea just one that might work.

I think the what's new will keep an author visible for a few days and the week view and last 100 will also keep a story visible
In regards to a limit I say no thanks.

As another writer here with a real stake in this "Musing."
I have to say that I'm very, very much against this. You bet I'm biased and have a vested interest in this the quick cuts have the extended list that's more than good enough.
My stories...my words, my art...I work in runs then I'll take a break, when it's there it's there when it's not it's not.
I know this isn't personal but it's well it feels personal.
And finally...it's editing the writers just as much as telling us what we can write and i thought we had that discussion too many times.
Hurt and disappointed.

I'm not one to hold back the prolific in order to make the less prolific feel better.
And that's coming from an author who hasn't posted in a while.
Nobody is making any money on this. Those who write do it out of the goodness of their hearts, and I think that it would be a travesty to punish them for their generosity. Those who spend the time and emotion writing deserve the limelight.
Personally, I'm not worried about exposure. Anyone who doesn't want to (or isn't able to) check every day can load the pages from the previous days. I, for one, make sure that I don't let any of the titles pass me by. I scroll down the list until I see a story that I have seen before. That doesn't mean that I read everything. I do, however, make sure that I don't miss something simply due to it passing by unnoticed.
People like Bailey, Ang, Drea, Tels, and all the other prolific authors are the life blood of this site. They are the ones who draw the people who read not only their fiction, but the fiction of people who, like me, just don't post that much.
Without them keeping things moving, the site would stagnate, we would get less visitors, and those of us who merely dabble would not have an audience.

What I try to do..
When I go to bed, I try and remember the last story or two that have been posted. That gives me a reference for the next day to pick up where I left off. If one's memory isn't all that great, you can just make a text file with the name of the last story posted to remind yourself.
It's simple and works well enough for me :)

I would vote against
simply because I occasionally post a short story as well as Bike on the same day. I'm against the posting of several episodes of the same story, although the admin team tend to sort that.

Ain't going to happen
Because the only way to make it happen would be for ME to remove stories after posting. Ain't gonna happen. Hard enough my enforcing only one chapter from a series sticky on the front page for longer than a few hours now. For that, I only have to unstick the older of two chapters after six or ten hours or so, and send a message to the author explaining why this happened. To restrict authors to only one post a day seems unreasonable since I can think of three BC authors who post more than 365 stories in a year. It would also be an unreasonable hassle for me to enforce such a rule -- so, ain't gonna happen.

That is pretty much what I thought you would say and IMHO a good decision too.
Everything's a tradeoff
Bandwidth, for example, is precious. A longer front page means that more bytes are circulated through the aether every time the front page is loaded. That's expensive on both ends, especially for those with slow connections, and they do exist, even in this age when the truly *serious* web surfers have at least the equivalent of a dedicated T1 line or better. I personally have a nominal 12mbps line that works out in practice to around 13mbps, because the AT&T fiber box on the street is about fifty feet from my house. Lucky me. Not everyone is quite so lucky.
The BC front page is theoretically sized to accommodate a day's stories above the Quick and Easy box, so it's easy to see what's available. If one has to page down many times, it becomes an accessibility issue for some users. There are also users who simply become bored, or confused, with pages that go on forever.
Both users and Big Closet are finite resources, and it would pay us all to remember that.

2nd words hurt. stop trying to be right, because that means someone is wrong. these arguments must stop.
3rd scroll down and look!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there is more than one page.
4th. Storysite is a good example of what happens when B.S. stops people from enjoying the art( I mean the the other server being taken down not the story). Come on how many of you are actually paying money enough to complain. me personally, I look through the first 3 pages for stories (and tags) I think may be worth reading.
Readers do the work, authors make it worth it, otherwise STOP (complaining and bitchhing)
that said maybe the "quick n easy should be at the top and bottom.
