Some years ago, Elektra released the above-named album, which featured hit songs from their back catalogue played by surprising cover bands. There was "Hello, I Love You" by the Cure, "You're so Vain" by Faster Pussycat, and "Hotel California", in Spanish, by the Gipsy Kings.

I'm on a Mexican Radio
That Spanish version of HOTEL CALIFORNIA has been receiving heavy play on the local Mexican pop stations around here for several years. I'm always hearing it coming from apartment windows or passing cars. Fitting, I suppose, since Hotel California in the town of Todos Santos, BC (no, the other BC) is supposedly the inspiration for the tune.

Right on Sister
Although I'm sure it's some famous hollywood actress or maybe Ima Sumac
your picture on the right there brings to mind Sister Juana Inez de La Cruz,
that cool Mexican lesbian feminist genius scholar poet nun back in the 17th century,
who got in trouble with the Inquisition for questioning papal infallability and writing
poetry that in its vague symbolic way was occasionally on the steamy side of Walt Whitman
and dangerously humanistic. Couldn't find a link to any of her works, but there was a cool
spanish language movie made about her back in the nineteenseventies, I forget the title,
recommended if you like Frieda & The Three Amigos. Surprised nobody here has written
a story about her. Maybe from the POV of an especially modest sister with a secret,
or something...

Una Otra?
Una otra BC? Oh, yo entiendo, ahora, La otra es CB, Columbia Britannica. Por suspuesto, es en el lugar mas mejor in el mundo, Canada, mi hogar y tierra nativa. Si, es la verdad, que yo soy uno de muchos travestis chica a chico aqui en el gran notre blanco, especialmente en Vancouver. Oh, hablo un poquito de francés tambien. Y, naturalmente, frespañol, una melange à la fois!

I love that cover version of Hotel California (imo it was the best thing about Rubaiyat), even though I'm not much of a fan of the original. I used to play the Gypsy Kings version for friends, and see whether they could guess what it was from the first few bars. Almost nobody ever did, although once you've heard it the first time it's so incredibly obvious. I always loved the "aha!" moment when the chorus arrived in English.

There is a sushi bar in Venice, CA, Hama Sushi, which has a long tradition of playing the song every night around closing time. The sushi chefs pick up their chopping boards and clap them together where the handclaps go in the song. It's not something to choose the restaurant for, but it's an indelible experience.
