Over the almost year that I have been here, I have tried to become more faithful with comments at the end of other's stories.
I just happened to notice that my latest installment here, "MS Frankenstein" has had 614 reads but 2 comments. Admittedly, the story is not that well put together, so I can understand somewhat. Episode 2 will be greatly improved.
Now, I understand in my heart, the hurt of those who post really professional work and get few posts.
You would not want me as a site "Mistress" because I would write some code that would send habitual "freeloaders" electronic bombs to give them a good swat.

The Readers Do Not Have to
comment. It would be wonderful if they did. The Authors would love it. But we will not enforce this site in that manner. It's not worth running a site if we had to resort to the kind of hounding it would take to 'make' people comment.
Some people do not have time, some cannot find the right words because a serialsode or chapter just fell short of blah while the rest of the series is quite good. We have a voting button for like a 'quickie.' While nowhere near as good as a comment, they tend to indicate that the piece was read and recognized.
Just keep in mind that real life pervades us, each person has different beliefs and feelings, and sometimes things should not be said. If you do comment, comment. Constructively critique the story or the author in a well meaning manner without degrading them or the work. Do not summarize the story within the comment. But do place your feelings and soul within it when you do.
Remember, treat others how you yourself would like to be treated.

4 me it is all about time
Gwen, I don't have much computer time as it is, so I spend what time I can writing. I do try to read other authors works, especially those who support mine with votes and comments.
You, big sister, have been one of the more wonderful of my three fans and will find time to read your stories as soon as I am able. I only recently caught up with Christine Chase. and that took me months to do. (I only commented once on that story, because everyone else said the things I was feeling)
When I firt started my little story, I asked the monitors how I was to judge the success or failure of a story. they told me to watch the number of hits it recieves. votes also help, but there seems to be just a few people who vote on stories and they vote almost religiously on certain stories. Then there are those three fans, you included, who leave wonderful, heart lifting comments that encourage and boister our resolve to write even better and more creative.
Give it time, Sis. Votes and comments don't come easily by the readers here, just know that if someone has strong feelings fore, or against your story, they will comment.

There seems little logic to the number of comments.
Timing is everything seems to apply. Post a story when not much else is positing and it may attracts lots of comments. Even a great story may not get many if it hits when many new stories hit at the same time.
I have seen the lack of comments on Randalynn and others of my favorites here, even Angela Rasch who is known for her strong opinons and equally intense stories has posted some that garnerd few comments.
I have had chapters of my rather lighthearted stuff get conciderable comments while others get but a few. Sometimes something you write puts a bee under a readers bonent.
Write for yourself, Gwen, but do keep the readers in mind -- IE don't leave out info they need to follow the story. You as the writer *know all* but the reader needs help now and again.
I do try to comment but I have time limits too and, well I'm lazy at times.

... not to get comments, but it isn't a reflection on your work. You were upset at only getting 2 comments with 614 reads. On my serialized novel, No Obligation, i had one chapter with almost 2000 reads and only two comments, and a bunch of my standalone stories had similar commenting ratios.
In the end, it's true. We write for ourselves, but also for the applause of our readers. And sometimes, just writing for ourselves has to be enough -- because the applause has to be spontaneous or it just feels forced. And unlike hand clapping, written applause is a lot harder to do.
So cut folks some slack, k? The standing ovations will come soon enough. *smile*

Lack of commenting
It bugs me not to get comments but I probably get my share. I don't leave comments as much as I did when I finally decided to join the site last year for one simple reason--I don't read as much as I used to because I'm usually busy writing when I get the time.
Right now, I don't really have the concentration to do much of either because I'm on vacation and staying with relatives and the place is a madhouse. ::smile:: That's why I'm reading blogs and commenting on them. ::grin::
But to those who do take the time to comment, many thanks, and not just for commenting on my own stuff.

Remember also, you have to be logged in to comment, but not to read. You don't even have to have an account to read. So, where would those "electronic bombs" be going in those cases? To all the people who share an IP? That would make you an internet terrorist. See? Besides that, there's just something that leaves a bad taste in one's mouth to FORCE people to give feedback.
