After a lot of conniving double-handed back stabbing that included a lot of misdirection and lying, I am saddened to announce that my mother did not steal my inheritance. She tried her best to do so, with the truth of what she was doing coming to me in the end. She did things like tell the insurance company she was my aunt's only surviving near relative (I guess nephews don't count as near relatives, but besides, my Aunt also has a surviving older brother). She sent in a "bill" for funeral expenses (something she typed on probably Microsoft word because it definitely wasn't professionally done). And she got a lawyer to try to get the annuity that the Life insurance policy was attached to.
All that did was delay me getting the check my Aunt wanted me to have. It isn't an absurd amount, just over 14k, and it makes me very sad to be holding it in my hand. I suppose this is going to be the very last gift that my aunt sends to me and I can't help but cry. My mother refuses to send me any mementos, any pictures, so I have nothing that I can hold onto except for this check. 36 years of receiving on my part and i don't even have a photograph, just tears and memories. My aunt tried her best to teach me to be forgiving, to not hate anyone, I am failing at applying those lessons currently. But I wanted to share my good fortune with the community, maybe I'll finally get my hair done.

Kidding aside... Katie, I'm glad you got your last 'gift' from your beloved Aunt Roe (also known as "Mother" to your heart), and I'm sorry about the sadness and anger toward your petty birth mother because she won't give you anything to remember her by, and she KNOWS what Aunt Roe means to you. Some people are just selfish bitches. We have a few in my family too (thankfully not my mother). I know that doesn't help much, even though it's true.

Aunt Roe may not have been able to leave you anything but that money, but the check isn't what she left you. She touched your heart and will always be with you.
Most people recommend you do nothing with the money for at least a year. Let the emotions calm down before you do something with it. Then seek some way to spend the money that will make your Aunt Proud. Spend it on something big and major, something that will remind you of your Aunt for years.
When I got an inheritance, I spent it on something that has caused me to remember my Grandfather and his positive influence on my life. For the last 20 years whenever I think about what I did or see mementos from it I am reminded of my grandfather.

I wish I had some great words to take away the pain hon, but all I got is the fact you have your memories, and no one can take those away from you. As for the money, do something super nice for you, okay?
Are there criminal charges
Are there criminal charges involved with what she did? Is there someone you can report her to? If anything, sending you a fake bill sounds like mail fraud, which is a federal crime just by itself. Also, in addition to defrauding you, she was also attempting to defraud the insurance company.
Forgiveness is good, but a part of good is seeing justice, too.

The insurance company itself might file charges. Attempting to defraud them, especially with the potential liabilities from _other_ relatives, isn't taken well.
I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.
