But I worried it might be seen as disrespectful of a day that's still very painful for some. What would you guys think?

Some people will never get

Some people will never get over that day and will always see anything about it as hurtfull.

I'd say just write it, as long as you're not intending to use it to hurt someone it shouldn't be a reason to stop you out of fear someone out there will be offended. Don't forget: to some this whole site is offending, while there's nothing wrong with it objectively.

I don't know how a TG oriented story will serve to honor the dead and the state of the populous at that time in history who were on high alert after the attacks...I wouldn't be interested in that setting for a tale. I also have skipped movies like Flight 93 and such...

Just put me down as a no vote....

I'm not being callous

It was over ten years ago, as Sarah says some will never get over it but people would find life easier if they didn't cling onto the past. Life is for the living.

I went to a Jewish day school and every morning at prayers one of the teachers would say Kaddish (prayer of mourning for those jews who died in ww2.So yes, people should not forget but we cannot be miserable about death for our whole life.

There are numerous comedies made about war or regarding war, humans need to realise that life goes on. People have died because they wanted to transition and weren't given the freedom to do it. How is that any less painful than dying during that event?

Not Unless There's More To It...

If it's just the background event for the story, I don't see any problem. If it's integral to the story (in that, for example, your character takes the attack personally and spends her life seeking revenge), I'd be a bit bothered about it if the story concluded that someone other than al-Queda was in fact to blame for the destruction of the towers. (Only because it would make me feel that the story was incidental to the conspiracy theory.)

I'd struggle..

... to relate the background of the horrendous event to transitioning, and an orphan, even more. t happened. It affected all our lives in some way, but it won't have made an orphan get feelings to crossdress, tansgender and transition.... no way.... merge the trauma into a general unhappiness, maybe but the urge to transition starts elsewhere if you ask me - and you did! Thanks for asking.

I recall standing on Santa barbara beach this last 9/11 and seeing veterans planting several thousand US flags in dead-straigth lines; covered the beach by the pier... Now that was commemoration! (And believe me, we in England do "DO" commemoration when it matters!)

So, on balance, I'd avoid this one - there are many more stories to tell - and you doo so, so well! Love Ginger x

Yes, do it.

It's mind boggling the number of people telling you not to do this story. That's silly. Write what you want, about what you want, and relate it HOW you want. That's the freedom of being a writer. If you think there's a story to tell then tell it! Don't ever let yourself be held up by other people's opinions.

That's the trap a lot of authors on this site fall in to. "So-and-so made a nasty comment so I'm pulling all my stuff" or "I didn't get as many views as I wanted so I'm abandoning this story." It shouldn't matter; who cares what so-and-so thinks? You write because you like writing or so I should think. If you do it just for popularity then it will reflect in your work and seem shoddy.

Write your story.

Seconded

I totally agree with Celynn. While I like it when people like my stories, I don't write them going 'will they like this? Will they like that?' I just write the story that comes to me. If people like it, great. If not, I still got to tell my story and that's good enough for me. If you're still worried about it, you can always put a 911 tag on it and a warning so people who might be bothered by it can skip it.

...would probably be a bad idea. But a real & honest story of lives affected by the tragedy and how people, how we pick up the pieces and continue to live life; that's would be good IMHO.

I agree...

I agree with Veronica, write it respectfully and there should be no problem...especially if it deals with realism and social behavior that is a direct result of reality.

Go for it!

9/11: The Musical

Probably isn't such a clever idea, in theory, but -

'Springtime for Hitler' was just as bad, and yet 'The Producers' was a smash hit. Several times.

There are always ways to dream up something which can be turned into an acceptable offering if one knows how. Only problem is, the number of those who know how is very small. I certainly couldn't pull that off.
