Think of a future Earth, where the long-dreaded nuclear war has come and gone, and the global population was knocked down to the level of the nineteen hundreds, but fully recovered and again prosperous, with the human race starting to explore the galaxy.
But when the humans get the inevitable proof that there was indeed other intelligent life, what if these aliens weren't terribly different from the humans, and what if these people were on the brink of war themselves...

A Dedication to Holly
A fellow writer in BCTS named Holly Hart was helping me edit my story, “Shepherd Moon.” Prior to her passing away, she finished editing the prologue, and parts 1 to 3 of the story. Holly and I agreed that we would post the edited version of the story when it was completed and we would hold off on posting any edited versions until then.
As many in the site know, Holly passed away August of 2013. It was a big disappointment that Holly wasn’t able to do her magic with parts 4, 5 and the epilogue, as well as with the “Stories from the Shepherd Moon.” But now that the story’s finished, I am posting our edited version of the prologue, and parts 1, 2 and 3, and I am dedicating the completed story to Ms Holly “Happy” Hart.
She was a talented and open-minded editor who always had an encouraging word for amateur writers like me, and was a kind soul - gentle in her encouraging correspondence, and always positive in her outlook in life despite the considerable challenges that were in her way. Holly, in fact, “featured” heavily in my blogs, as she helped me through my trials and tribulations as an amateur writer here in BCTS.
It is through the example of people like her that I find the will to persevere, and the power to remain positive regardless. If Holly can continue on and remain positive up to the last moments of life, we all can.

Brings to mind the Cold War and the American led U.N. military against the Communist Bloc in two wars that divided two small nations. But here WE are the supposedly back water civilization caught between two Super Powers. And Errand of Mercy

Summery gave the wrong impression
You know, the summery and prologue of this story really gave the wrong impression of what it might be. I thought this was going to like another BC flower power ST:TNG Sci-Fi offering. Instead this turned out to be DS9.

you know I was wondering if I was the only one who ever read, Larry Niven, and E.E. (Doc) Smith. This further reminded me of Paul Hogan. Keep it up it is really getting good.
I was most impressed, Bobbie.
Reminded me of many of the best bits of DS9, Babylon 5, Stargate, and a bunch of other space operas.
VERY good and I love how tech has evolved differently in different worlds. The revelation that the highly advanced space faring race leading the friendly trip to Earth was only now first producing integrated circuits and still made heavy use of vacuum tubes was brilliant.
But is makes sense. Each civilization need not discover things in the same *sequence * we did. IE we were slow at getting FLT but several centuries ahead in electronics and other areas.
I look forward to more.
Feel sad about our hero's, well heroine's unrequited love. I am suspicious she MIGHT become the lover of one of the Princesses. Who knows? His/her dedication to duty and to making right the potential mess his discoveries unleashed speaks well for his now her character. Um, whatever happened to the over ambitious Captain and his immediate supervisor, the ones who lied to CETI and the Earth Space military high command? Is there a deep space equivalent of an Aleutian weather station assignment?
But will the cultural differences be too much and what of the nasty guys and gals? What was with the Tirosians and their reluctance to join the battle? Just letting their minions do the grunt work -- IE why risk their own lives when their vassal states can do or die in their place -- or what?
I notice the men said they felt the odd tingling in the presence of the aliens they were helping and maybe a few of the women did too. Does that mean the empathy/telepathy does NOT work well on masculine brains vs feminine ones?
Very odd that.
