Nah!
Isn't it a bit cliche..gives a person an excuse to dress and all that...why not Thanksgiving? :)

Theme
How about "Homecoming"? That's usually in the early fall, and you can take it literally or metaphorically.
Perhaps a Costume Ball
Perhaps we could theme the stories on a Costume Ball which would not have to be held on Halloween. It could be the present or a period piece. It would not necesarily have to involve Trick or Treat or any good vs evil aspect unless the author brought that into the story.
It would be nice to kick up my heels and have some fun without bringing in the trials of daily life. It would be nice to go to a party and enjoy myself.
I'm sure that the Home coming theme would lead to lots of good stories but most of them are full of angst along the way. Sometimes you take the journey and there isnt anything at the end to grab hold to. Great stories but little emotional satisfaction.
Any way, thats my take on it at present. I feel like any contest would be a positive thing. Just anything to get motivated to write is a good thing.

Oooh!
A costume ball as a shared universe! Different deadlines... Short shorts first, and then the short stories next, but they incorporate the short shorts, then the novettes, which incorporate the short shorts and short stories, then novellas, etc! That could be a lot of fun! Having elements of the other such stories in each following step! Or even just have 3 deadlines and draw lots to see who goes first, second, and third!

A shared universe! Sounds great!
If that were the case then unless it was a known universe then someone might write a story defining the universe and the others would write off of that initial story. Those which became published could be drawn on for source material for stories as yet unfininshed until all was completed. In order for it to work together, it would be necessary to stay within the universe's guidelines and true to all of the story thus far written. If something this structured were offered as the contest then a not so structured alternate could be an option. That way even if the writer thought she had followed the rules of the contest and it was decided in some way that it had not then that story could be omitted from the shared story cannon and entered into the general contest.
Lots of good ideas for this and I can't wait to see what is decided.

I like the Thanksgiving idea!
First major family holiday of the holiday season... somewhere that the main character can confront the family naysayers...
Granted, it's not really fair to the non-North American writers

My original idea was ...
... another "Holiday Story" contest like last years which was centered around Christmas. That would leave room for Halloween, Homecoming, Thanksgiving, Guy Fawkes Day, whatever? :)
