With thankfulness for the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. While this holiday is an American celebration, I honor the sacrifice of those around the world who gave their lives in the name of freedom and liberty. Many of us many have lost a loved one; a family member or a close friend. You have my sincere condolences for your loss and my gratitude as well

Remember as well those who survived to come home, but carry the war within them and deal with it to some degree on a daily basis. PTSD keeps an icy grip on the soul without help to try to deal with it.

Memorial Day is the United States commemoration of those who died in military service.
Rememberence Sunday is the United Kingdom's equivalent.
Armistice Day / Remembrance Day(11th November) is broadly equivalent, and marks the end of hostilities on the Western Front in WWI, and although not usually a holiday (in the UK at least), is marked by a two minute silence.
In the US, 11th November is Veterans Day and a public holiday.

Older name for Memorial Day
Originally there was Decoration Day, in which freed slaves decorated the graves of Union soldiers who died in the American Civil War. It started in Charleston, SC but the custom spread across the country and widened to include the graves of any soldiers. After WWI, it was made an official holiday by the U.S. Government and called Memorial Day which had been an alternate name in some areas.
Originally, it was set to be May 30 (which it happens to be this year), a date which was chosen because it is NOT the anniversary of any
notable battle in the Civil War. Now it's the last Monday in May, to avoid midweek holidays. June 3 was Confederate Memorial Day (also Jeff Davis's birthday), but that's been absorbed into the wider Memorial Day.

Memorial Day
Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. Service Members who died while in the military service.[1] First enacted by the an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR)[2] to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War – it was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.
Rememberance/Armistice Day- The 11th hour of the 11thday of the 11th month
In a forest in Northern France lies the little town of Compiègne. There you will find an exact replica of the historic railway carriage where Foch and Erzberger signed the agreement which ended the terrible bloodshed and carnage of World War I.
It is a replica because the Germans took the original back to Germany when they invaded France yet again in World War II. As the advancing American troops convened on the town where the German army had hidden it, the Germans set fire to it and destroyed it irretrievably. War has always been about symbolic acts – the flag erected, the shrine destroyed, the hurt inflicted.

the USA 'celebrates' both Memorial Day (end of may) and Veterans/Remembrance Day (Nov 11) and during both days celebrate their 'honored dead'.
So I was wondering what was different about them?

Memorial Day & Veterans' Day
Both these holidays have the intention of honoring those lost in battle, but history & common practice have modified both.
Originally celebrated May 31st as Decoration Day to honor those Union troops lost during the War Between the States, i.e. The "Civil" War, Memorial Day is used now not only to honor those lost in war, but also many remember all their departed loved ones, especially by many secularists as well as many in "non-liturgical" Protestant churches who eschew the traditional ecclesiastical calendar. Thus it has replaced All Saints' & All Souls' Days for these churches.
Veterans' Day recalls the Armistice ending World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. It was observed in all countries signing the Armistice. In the United States, it's a day of remembrance celebrated by & for all veterans, surviving as well as deceased. Many attend festivities & memorials wearing their old service uniforms.
Both holidays tend to be a mixture of patriotic & religious themes, but I've noted over time an increasing tendency for Memorial Day to emphasize general remembrance & religious themes over patriotic ones, while Veteran's Day remains as a more secular but steadfastly patriotic observance.

Memorial Day is an American Holiday, first established after the Civil War, and is dedicated to the memory of those who died.
Veteran's Day, which falls on the date that traety ending W.W. I was signed, 11/11/18, is dedicated to Veterans. To those who served and survived the horrors of war.
Of course there is no reason not to celebrate veterans on Memorial Day, or mourn those who died on Veteran's Day. But each holiday has a separate focus.
