well, i was rather stupid. I have been fighting tooth pain the last couple of days, and i had the chance to go to see a dentist today, and didn't take it. It would have meant waiting most of the day at the ER, and i felt better by the time i might have considered it. Now, i dont know when i might have another shot, and i wishing i had gone.

Toothache! Ouch!
You poor dear! I feel the greatest sympathy for you! Speaking from experience after 11 root canals and 8 crowns, I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE FEELING. Ice works as a short term solution, but see a dentist as soon as possible.

If you have access to any sort of alcohol (I've been told to use whiskey, but never had any on-hand :-) Used to have a bottle of 'shine in the house, not mine of course, but that's another story), just a swish is supposed to help quite a bit to numb the pain.
I've used listerine, though that was on top of Tylenol, so I have no idea which actually worked. :-) Hope you get in to see someone soon.

I tried one night to relieve a toothache by getting a bit plastered (I thought, feeling no pain? Sounds good!). I don't normally drink, but a friend of mine suggested this drink called a "Skylab"-supposedly the most potent drink at the bar. After seven of them, I not only had not relieved any of the pain, but I was helping the bartender close up and walked a few people people home to their apartments. I've never really been drunk yet (got a bit muddled once, but switched to Coca-cola and sobered up-can't have been too bad!). Maybe it's just me?

You might want to put salt in warm water and swish it over the tooth...that helps some time :) My sister also swears by that Oragel stuff. :)
Tooth discomfort
If you have a water pick type oral irrigation device, use it with some warm water. Things in the gum line can cause a lot of pain, add an ounce of mouthwash to the warm water. Yes, clove oil helps as well. I usually do the water pick rinse then chew an aspirin, do not swallow it but swish it around in the mouth particularly the area of the pain, then swallow with a sip of water without rinsing your mouth.
If the pain precludes chewing the aspirin then crush the tablet first between two tablespoons, add a few drops of water then swish it in your mouth.
