Large portions of my stories take place in this area. I graduated from Humboldt State University 44 years ago. What if this had been there then? Wow!

While I DREAMED of such a thing at times... Back in the day when I was at Uni, I was in such denial I couldn't have taken advantage of it even if I'd been willing to admit I needed it. That said, back then, I'd been taught that it was only wierdos that thought they wanted to change sexes... There's no way a guy could possibly ... Sorry, that's not needed here.

because it shows that the ordinary system is failing transgender patients. America rarely fails to bewilder me in its attitudes towards people who are different by failing to accept diversity and basic human rights - large areas are still in the thrall of C16th puritanism.
If I failed to treat someone because of their ethnic, racial, sexual even political leanings, I could expect to be disciplined for professional misconduct.

Here's the deal Angharad -- the U.S. of A. ain't perfect. We can agree on that. But it is highly offensive for someone from another country to make blanket statements like yours.
How would you like it if I made stereotypical remarks about people in the U.K.? Seen a dentist lately? Or would that require that you take a bath . . . ewwwww! I'm sure there are many people in the U.K with good oral hygiene who bathe regularly just as there are aspects of our healthcare that are much more humane and caring than those in other countries.
My daughter-in-law is a Yale-trained RN. Over Thanksgiving we discussed what constitutes discrimination in a patient/midwife relationship. I'm sure you can appreciate how important patient selection is in avoiding malpractice suits. She tells me she has to be extremely careful to avoid ethical and legal problems. So -- at least in our state -- people have some protection.

Being T does not make one a NUT CASE.
The thing that puts us over the edge is the lack of acceptance and all the bullshit we have to put up with. After I came out, I never tried to work as an Electrician on a Construction site again. I doubt that I would have lived a full day.
I partly agree with Angharad, in that much of our public system is clueless about T folk and basic dignities. It is getting better but you still run into the odd asshole. Portland, OR was great, but down here in Ohio; yes well they have not killed me yet.
