Sounds more like Southern Snail! Then again, the UK rail network is infamous for grinding to a halt for almost any reason...
Driver shortage (Sundays are apparently the worst)
Signal failure (often resulting in the train stopping at the signal, then the driver phoning to see if the line's clear to proceed.)
Broken-down train (with very few passing places, trains further down the line are held up until its shifted)
Leaves on the line (perhaps their most infamous excuse ever!)
Wrong sort of snow (the latter caused several Eurostar trains to die after entering the Chunnel from the French side earlier this year)

Rant
late trains. Trains terminated early because, er, they were late. That then continued on to my destination empty... Trains that went straight past the platform despite their being scheduled to stop.
I got tired of speaking the truth to the station staff: I know it's not you, I know it's not your fault, but I NEED TO RANT!!!!!

How I could make rude comments in Welsh...I was having lunch with a Valleys girl whose brother is due to get wed near Machynlleth n a fortnight,so please tell Bonzi to stand you on the naughty step.
