Today was National Coming Out Day - A day to increase awareness of GLBTG issues. But until I happened to catch MSNBC, I had no idea about it. I wonder, did anyone do anything in relation to this celebration?

Coming out day

Yes, I warned a friend that was all enthused about the HRC and how they threw us under the bus to further their cause.
I came out against the HRC :)

This amuses me on so many levels :-)

I sort of came out to my best friend the day before, and now I'm giving some serious thought to "officially" coming out to my Mom so I can find out once and for all if she's willing to help me plan transitioning or if I need to look elsewhere for that kind of help. :-)

Maybe if I could find a damn therapist... *grumble*

Anyway, I had no idea of the significance of the day myself. That's why the timing kind of amuses me :-)

I just heard this on Headline News. They have 60 days to appeal, but yay for now? :-)

I really haven't been following the news so I'm not up on whether this is a victory or a sidestep, so I just tacked it on here instead of making a new blog post.

Is this an American thing

As a UK citizen i could not envisage a coming out day,if nothing else it seems downright dangerous. Each individual has their own unique circumstance to deal with,to come out en masse with like minded people will not resolve any single person's situation.
It most likely will leave the individual more confused and isolated.
To declare one's true self is personal decision.

That being said...

...the UK has a history of taking the worst ideas that come from across the pond, waiting ten years to make sure they are truly crap and then adopting them, so maybe in a few years time this'll rear its ugly head in our regressively less green and pleasant land.

Oh, and to any American readers, please don't get the wrong idea, I know America has some great ideas too. It's just like every other country in the world; a mix of good and bad. It's just that one of the worst things about the UK at the mo' (IMHO) is our tendency to adopt really bad stuff from you guys. Personally I blame the tv, infernal device that sucks our souls dry and undermines the morality of our world. Oh hell is that time? I'm missing Jerry Springer!
