I used to listen to Charlotte Church when she was young and thought that her singing was wonderful. For me it was disappointing to see her transition into other music but that is her right if she wishes.
Accidentally, early this morning around 2:00 AM, I discovered Katherine Jenkins! I think the wiki said she is Welsh, but I do not remember clearly because of the hour. Did I hear her sing Ave Maria in Welsh? I would not know, because I neither understand Welsh nor Italian.

Yes, it was she, and I think that is the function at which she sang. She is quite good, and later I heard her sing with Antonio Banderas, wow what a combination.

The language
The song was in Latin, but as there are only two words....The presnter was, I believe, Aled Jones, who is a gog* and was speaking Welsh with a pronounced gog accent.
*gog: from gogledd, North. He's from Bangor in gogledd Cymru, or to put it in Welsh, mae e'n dod o Fangor, yng ngogledd Cymru

You leave us Gogs alone!
Our adenoidal accent travels further than you think. If you flatten the vowels of a Gog speaking English then harden some of the consonants you end up with a perfect Scouse Accent. I know cos that's exactly the accent I used to have. Lots of Gogs from Deeside speak Welsh with a Scouse accent.
My Llanelli born girfriend, (later to become my wife,) couldn't believe her ears when I finally took her home to the old village in Flintshire where I spent the early years of my life. I didn't want to return to the village of my birth (Caerwys,Flintshire.)but she was working her curative magic on me.
When she finally got me to agree to return I took her and let her stand on the village cross on a busy Saturday morning. She simply stood there in disbelief in the middle of the village square as people all around her spoke Welsh with our strange half-Scouse, - half Gog accent.
I've more or less lost my Scog accent now, 38 years in Port Talbot does that to a girl.
I know what you South-Walians think of us Gogs, but It would be unkind to post it here.

If you ever get the chance to listen to or indeed to see the opera, you will discover that this is sung by the princess in the tale as well as by the wandering hero.
I first heard it this way, long before Euro '96, and thoroughly loved the whole thing. I saw it on the tv, I think it was being done in the arena at Verona.
