It appears the military is willing to keep and find jobs for blind people, even letting them stay on active duty. Of course, he is not gay, TG or TS, just blind and a Christian believer. Obviousily well qualified to stay in the army. He has people who tell him what he is signing, direct him to walk and navigate in his crowded office. He even climbed Mr. Ranier as a blind man? Maybe he'll has someone to tell him when to shoot too if he wants to go back to combat? Sorry, this is classic stupidity on the part of the military. Kick out Gays, TG, TS and keep blind people on active duty. RIGHT
It is nice that he has adapted to his war induced handicap, but I can't see how such a minor problem as being completely blind makes him any better qualified than un-handicapped people who happen to be gay, TG or TS, who are forced out of the military under "Don't Ask, Don't tell."

Though unable to return to his old infantry duties in Iraq, Smiley has thrived in stateside postings such as his latest at West Point, from which he graduated in 2003. He now commands the Warrior Transition Unit at West Point for ailing or wounded soldiers.

He's serving a stateside job. Do you know what this does? It frees someone up to do the job Capt. Scott Smiley did before he was blinded serving his countrty. Work as infantry man.
There is no classic stupidity in what the Army did. Would you rather see Smiley sulking and depressed over what was done to him and taking pity on himself? I'm not going to say anything more.
