The word "vicarious" is defined on Dictionary.com as "felt or enjoyed through imagined participation in the experience of others". I think that many writers are being vicarious with their writing. It pretty easy for me to identify with my main characters because my interest in this subject originated with the problems my inter-sexed sister had when her gender problems came to light. Both she and I were very young when it happened but, of course, it made a big impression on me so I remember quite a bit about it and I learned more as time went by.
Note: I mislabeled an earlier blog of mine "Gravity". I will try to rename it whenever I have time.
Water is a pretty heavy substance. With enough volume and enough force, water is almost unstoppable.
To lift water against the force of gravity tales some kind of energy. If you put a dry roll of toilet paper in about ½" of water (that's about 12.7mm if you swing like that)
The water will climb up into the toilet paper roll until the whole roll is soaked.
I found a list of clichés to avoid in one's writing. Of course, I had to see if I could use all the clichés in a short amount of space. It wasn't difficult, but it was kinda fun. Here is the result:
Have you ever felt envy for one or more of your characters? I wouldn't admit it either! It would be easy to do if a character had too good a life.
The reason I ask is I would like to suggest a movie along these likes. The movie is "Simone" (2002), starring Al Pacino. Just about anything I say about it could be a spoiler except: see it!
A character in a story I'm writing now is a scientist who, due to a discovery of his, is very well off. I'm thinking of asking him for a loan or gift. Has anyone ever done this? Does anyone know if it will work? Probably won't, since the story and the characters are fictional. I'd probably just receive fictional money. Oh, well. Maybe it's worth a try.
I have been writing "Amie and Jamie" for a year or so and find that I'm bored with it. The characters are young, with lots of possibilities, and they need someone fresh to take over. This has probably been done before, and will be glad to answer any questions the new author might have.
It will also be of great interest to me what avenues the character travel when guided by a new hand.
Any takers? Lemme know!
I am overwhelmed by the number of reads of the first 3 chapters of "Amie and Jamie". The next chapter has been delay for a number of reasons. First, I work seasonally and it's that season. I score elementary and high school tests online at home for a company called "Pearson Education". Secondly, it's also allergy season, so I sit sneezing on my laptop as I score the students responses. At least I'm not handling their actual papers. Third, my daughter, who is only 39, has degenerative osteoarthritis in her vertebrae.
