Taxonomy upgrade extras:
Was getting on Youtube last night when the message said I had to download IE 10. It's causing all sorts of problems. :(
I know don't tell me. I'm busy trying to stop kicking my own ass.

Youtube and IE...
I'm using IE9 and it's not been bugging me. I take it IE10 is full of bugs. Not surprised at this point in time.

IE 10
The problem, I think, is that Microsoft in their wisdom (!) have decided to class IE 10 as a "critical upgrade".
You have to go through your upgrade options with a fine tooth comb to prevent it sneaking in automatically.

Don't they always upgrade in
Don't they always upgrade in browser as a critical upgrade?
Microsoft anything
I don't run anything M$ until after SP1 comes out and it gets a couple of reviews. My daily browser is Chrome and I do have Firefox just in case.

... Yes.
IE 9 was a 'critial upgrade'; they do it with almost everything. Especially the "Microsoft Validation" tools...
What's even more fun is that if you tell them to _not_ install Silverlight (or Bing Desktop), as soon as they come out with a new revision, they demand that you install it - again. Even the the microsoft malware tool - if you say 'nope, don't want March', they'll promptly offer you February. Drop that, and they'll offer you January.
Your best bet is to turn updates totally off, then just run it manually once a week or so. Pick and choose what you want, ignore the rest.

Yes, I hate ie 10 too!
IE 10 was downloaded automagically 2 mornings ago. It is just wonderful, NOT! I am too lazy at this point to figure out how to uninstall it but perhaps I will. I can get stuff to work in Firefox, so I am using that for some things.
Backing Out
Whenever Windows Update runs, a Restore Point is taken. Run System Restore from that RP or an even earlier version.
Set your system update preferences to download important updates, but not automatically install them. When you are notified that updates are available, go through the list and cull trouble makers, like an new IE version, out.

That's unless you've turned
That's unless you've turned off Restore, which some people do. (and some viruses do it for you. Even if you remove the virus, you still don't have it turned back on).
Mine is set to notify, but not download _or_ install.

IE
never use it so no problems for me
IE10
IE10 is only available for Windows 8 and Windows 7 w/sp1. There is no other versions available. I have my system setup with Win7 SP1 but mine is a 64 bit OS and have not received anything.
The only version I know of that was made into a forced update was IE8 or 9 so that users of IE6 were forced to upgrade due to numerous bugs and security holes.
IE 10 downloaded on a Windows
IE 10 downloaded on a Windows 7 Pro 64 bit last night/this morning. (Clean install)

A (possibly too) simple answer
Download and use the Firefox browser. It's free and well regarded.

Yeah, it's almost anything but IE is better.
Unfortunately, Microsoft insist that you use IE to access Windows Update, otherwise I would never, ever, fire the thing up.

Gwen, I use Firefox,
and have no problems with Youtube.

And not only that
but Flash Andd Video Download (currently version 1.29) allows saving of YouTube to your local media, so's to make it easier to watch over spotty or slow connections.

Glitchy upgrades
It seems everybody is having problems with that. FF has kicked out a s**tload of incremental fixes and new versions the last few months. I keep all my software (even the Android apps) set to manual update, so I see the ones they are trying to sneak in the backway so you won't know about them until it's too late.
But it could be worse. I saw on Cnet that the upgrade/security fix they sent out to all the iphones yesterday has already been compromised. There's even a video showing how to do it. Fortunately it isn't a problem unless they have your in their possession. Fortunately there is a settings change that will stop it until the next security fix is released Still, it's gotta suck for Apple.
