Today I am celebrating my 7th Birthday as a legal woman. I remember that day well. I got up that morning and felt like a weight had been lifted. I dressed in my red skirtsuit heels, hose, blonde wig and did my makeup and then drove to the courthouse for my name change hearing. Standing there hearing the bailiff call me by my male name, knowing how I looked, was a little nerve wracking. The best look I got was from our family attorney who was there representing another client. It was priceless! It took maybe 5 minutes before the judge pronounced me Jennifer Danielle Campbell and then I took the Certified copy she signed, down to the Circuit clerk's office and got ten more copies made to send to creditors and then I went to the Social Security office. The next morning, I went to the DMV and got my new license. It still had the "M" in the gender box, but I guess that's the way our state does things until you have SRS.

I recall my "day in court"... (Took me months to get the certified copies though. ARGH.) And, even with the Judge's signature, the name change didn't go into effect until 45 days after the hearing. ARGH. That said, my Drivers License (with the old hame) had an "F" for the gender marker two years earlier... And, I transitioned about two weeks after the name change became official (even though I couldn't fix my Drivers License or SS card - since I couldn't get copies of the court order...)
I wonder what day I would pick as my "anniversary" of "legal womanhood"...
Congrats, BTW. Glad you had such a memorable event. My outfit wasn't quite so nice (mostly borrowed from my wife - Navy slacks/jacket with a fuscia blouse)... Luckily it was my own hair! LOL

When I changed my address at the Wisconsin Motor Vehicle
office, I put female for gender. The lady behind the counter said she could not change the sex designation unless I had been in transition for one year or more. I told her it had been two years and gave her the name of my endocrinologist. She issued the driver's license with my new gender of female on it, and said welcome to womanhood. I just smiled. That was in 2003. I have used Barbara exclusively even before the legal name change in 1980. I had comments like, "isn't Barbara a funny name for a man?" I said I didn't know, but when they find a man named Barbara, ask him. LOL.

Oh, a comment to Payter. The 'true' rulers of Scotland have always been those that can win it by strength of arms or by the love of the people.
