The first and probably only cold snap has hit South Texas. So we get our winter this year, according to extended forecasts this should last into the first part of January, but I'm skeptical. Time to go shopping for a winter wardrobe (I wish). Now I know you Yankees are poo pooing our winter, but when eight months out of the year temperatures are 95 ° and above you get excited when the cold comes. I will be enjoying my walks in the fresh morning air for awhile. So this Texas gal says bundle up little dogies and keep warm if you can, find someone to cuddle up with. Freezing smiles, Jenn.

Care for the vines
Hello Maddy and hope you have a nice time in Germany. Just go out and breath on the vines. Many years ago I visited Franken in the summer after all the vines had been frozen during the winter so please help save the vines for future use in the area where you dwell. I hate to think that all the nice Riesling weines will be lost forever between Remagen abd Mainz and perhaps in Frankenland AGAIN.

Degrees vs. degrees
It wasn't clear from the graphic, but they were using degrees Fahrenheit, as used by the horribly antiquated standards of the USA. 15 degrees F equals about -9.4C. -4F is -20C. Sounds to me like the temperatures are about the same as in Germany, unless you are converting them already.
But being a NorCal gal, we're content with highs of 60F/15C and lows of 40F/4C.
Yeah, and I've been in Dusseldorf in February... Brrrr

At least if they are they're close to what we're getting in central Texas (sometime in the hills it can be colder even to the south, but not often by that much. At any rate, even in C 1 degree is cold around here, so is 5.
Here in Alabama,
we have yet to go below freezing.

Anything after 10 months of burning hot is great. A strange thing I have noticed is that even when the temp isn't that low (relative to what people in the rest of the country feel) it can still feel colder than it does when I have been up north in winter. Maybe it has something to do with the humidity. It just seems to bite a lot harder on cold, wet, and windy days.
It is kind of funny see everyone in Texas bundle up when it does get the least little bit cold. You would think we were in store for a blizzard the way some people dress. I'm naturally hot natured so I reveal in the cold and generally only need a pair of pants and a long t-shirt. Though when I was in college I was known for still going around in shorts and flip-flops when it would start dip below freezing. Of course that was mostly because my winter cloths were still back home.

Wow, Your Temp Varies
more than ours! I'm worried about bicycling tomorrow at 42°F, but by Sunday the morning temp might be as low as 32°. It rarely gets much colder than freezing around here, at least where there are streets and houses, etc. The desert at the same elevation could be 10 - 15° colder at sunrise. - - - - - Maddie!!! These temperature numbers from Jenn must be in °F; -15°C = 5°F !

When temperatures are below freezing, I have to include a sledgehammer in my prawn fishing gear. In such weather, being a cool cat doesn't require any effort on my part...
For me though, the warmth from huggles is a bonus. ^_^

I thot it was bad here. 57F here yesterday, and right now it's 32F, and gonna stay till about March, likely. Og course with last year's weather and the drought and heat this past summer, we may be back at 60 next week. I do seem to recall a -19F reading on the car temp reader last winter while I was trying to work.

...the local governmental leader in your local locale probably hasn't threatened the meteorologists with execution if they don't make and "deliver on" good weather predictions, as has happened a few times in the past couple of decades in Russia. ^^; One mayor of Moscow ran pretty much on that platform. And he won...
Coincidentally, one year it hit -40 degrees (either scale; they converge at that point) five times of which I was aware at the time. That was fun. The smog in Sankt-Peterburg actually froze out of the air completely...
So did a couple of water mains in the area in which I was living...
Then the city turned off the cold water to the block of apartment buildings in which I was living, but left the hot water (from a centralized boiler) on...

Yup that is about how much winter we get around where I live.
A little chuckle the sunday of Thanksgiving weekend my son had to scrape frost off his car windows and then drove home into 82F degrees in Ft Lauderdale FL.

Not sure which that is for South Texas. When I was in Houston and Galveston all I remember was that it was dammned hot, hot, hot!!!
