Mother's day sexual stereotypes

Well, tomorrow is Mother's day, and my store has been pushing hard for sales, but looking at all the pink signs pointing out discounts on home appliances, weepy movies, and flowery perfumes got me wondering.

What if you had a mom who didnt fit the nice neat little stereotype? What if your mom would prefer to watch an action film than a three-hankie weepie? What if she's more comfortable with power tools than with knitting needles? Do those types of moms get left behind?

And what about a parent like me? I'm a parent, and a woman (at least in my heart), but I'll never be a mom. And Father's day is a painful event for me as well, since the reverse stereotyping takes place, and I for one dont want a tie or drill bit, and would much rather get the kind of gifts offered for Mother's day.

Ah. well.

*gives Dorothy a pink drill some cheap drill bits, screws and a hammer for mothers day* Go to town with them!

Dorothy, I can understand where you are coming from.

My daughter told me yesterday that girls and women don't wear dresses and skirts any more, it is all jeans and shirts. I didn't want to rain on her parade, so I just let it go. Yes, they kind of over do it on the Mother's Day bit, but you know, the women who want those drills bits and the action movies, are like about 10% of the female population. There are still quite a lot of women that want what stores are offering for Mother's Day sales. Your blog is food for thought. Thank you for sharing.

Actually...

In the past six months, I've taken driving trips to both the West Coast and the Midwest. It's been my observation that I'm seeing more skirts and dresses than I have in a while throughout about 2/3rds of the country.

Mother's day

Hi Dorothy,

When I transitioned, my ex decided it was more fitting for the children to get me a mother's day pressie than a father's day one. In the UK mother's day is celibrated half-way between Lent and Easter on Mothering Sunday, so we had ours a few months ago.

If it was possible for my children (and ex) to come to this conclusion, then I'm sure it is possible that one day it might happen to you too.

In the meantime, remember that if your children don't know then they can't get your a suitable gift and possibly on a more suitable day. Also, if they do get you something on father's day, it means that they love you. Knowing they love you is more important than what they get and on what day.

Dorothee,

First of all what Stan said.

Second, I know the feeling >sigh<

Mothers Day

I bought my mother a trailer hitch and bolted it onto the family van. Now she can tow her boat around all year and she is tickled pink.

My mother bought me a pair of $120 Sandals for mothers day.
