Some people appear to switch gender identities spontaneously. Although I know nobody who has this condition, it is something of which we should all be aware.

Deeply troubled souls.
I think the larger problem in civilizations is that most of us have a binary model for gender, but the scientific community already knows things like this are quite variable, analog model. If you think of it, there are not many things in nature that follow a binary model.
It makes sense to me:)
Though I imagine there are variations on this variation even. We're just still scratching the surfaces of things really. But real interesting and gives me things to think about with my stories.

I read the Scientific American article. Seems more like a variant of Borderline Personality Disorder than Gender Dysphoria. Association with bipolar disorder also decreases its validity, and the correlation may be the expression of many other problems. Remember, the publication the study was initially printed in is for hypothesis looking for a home, and by a grad student looking for a PhD. In short, take with a grain of salt until there is a better formed study and peer review.

I have a young friend...
I have a young friend who's gender identity wasn't binary... She described it to me as "poly gender" (what she's worked out with her therapist.
The easiest way for me to "rationalize" (if that makes sense here) is there's these two hills - and a valley between... One hill's "male", one's female... And my friend sits down in the "valley" and wobbles - sometimes a little up the male side, sometimes up a little the female side and sometimes down in the valley...
She described it as sometimes she feels male, sometimes female and sometimes neither.
Given that this person is generally has her (sorry if this pronoun use bugs some of you, but I use this pronoun when she's not around to tell me otherwise because she grew up in my church... And has said it's okay) head screwed on tightly and her personality doesn't change in any "mode". It's more how she looks at things and feels about herself that changes.
I'm probably mangling this, but since I don't "live" this, I can only describe what I understand.

Yes, this is interesting. I'll try to keep track of this as the reports come in. No doubt, it will spark interest elsewhere in the medical/psychological world.
