Insomnia
I may have mentioned it here in the past, but I suffer from frequent bouts of Insomnia.
Some months I will sleep fairly well and get enough sleep to function, others I will get maybe 3 hours a night and drag through each day only to come home and collapse in bed and stare at the ceiling most of the night. I've had people offer up advice on what works for them, and I've tried everything, but it never works or if it does it only works for a few months. I've seen doctor after doctor, I've tried exercising before bed, sleeping pills, natural remedies and I've even tried changing my diet among other things. Some people treat me like I'm a layabout who just needs to get up and do something which they think will somehow solve my issue, but I've had days were I was literally running around practically all day then gone home completely exhausted and found that I still couldn't sleep.
My main point in posting this isn't to try and score pity points (Well maybe a little ;P) or have folks offer up advice (In fact, I'd rather they didn't). I'm posting because I've come to notice something regarding my insomnia and my writing. The less sleep I get, the slower my writing goes. Which probably shouldn't surprise anyone, but the really strange thing is that some of my best ideas come to me when I'm laying in bed trying to sleep. I haven't had a 'good' nights sleep in over two weeks and my writing has slowed down to a crawl. Last night I slept better than I have in days so I'm hopeful this particular bout of insomnia is coming to an end.
Since we're on the subject of my writing I'll give folks a bit of an update on how things are going. Most of this will actually be a reiteration of a previous blog. For those of you that aren't aware 'Destiny: Triumph of a Spellbinder' the third and final story in my Ragnarok Rising trilogy has been put on the back burner. I found myself losing interest and I didn't want to ruin the story by hurrying through it.
So I put that particular story aside and am working on "Hunger Pangs" a story set in EOF'S Dark Realms Universe which will introduce a new type of Unseen. I'm nearly 25,000 words in and I'm thinking it may be as long as 35,000 words perhaps even longer. This will be posted as a serial, but I won't start posting until the entire story is finished. This story is a lot darker than my usual stuff, aside from having a good amount of sex, the protagonist has a particularly foul mouth, and there are themes of rape and attempted suicide.
My interest in Ragnarok Rising has returned a thousandfold and I'm itching to get back to the final story. I have some new ideas which will require some tweaking of the story. (One character may be removed from the story completely) As I have mentioned before the protagonist will be a new character NOT Aryanna. Hopefully I can kick things into gear and be able to return to the story soon, it just depends on how soon I can finish "Hunger Pangs".

I have bouts of it too
I have bouts of it too, but mine is more of a 3rd shift issue. When I am day shift on the weekends it goes away. Depression can also make it much worse.
Then I go to work and stare down a microscope all day, fighting micro sleep. You know, where you take cat naps of 5 seconds? It is a horrible way to spend the night when it happens.
Have you tried Melatonin? I've never used it myself, but my Dad did. He claimed it was very effective.
It is a common nutrient, so you should be able to get it at health food stores and some pharmacies. If you don't trust it, you can talk to your doctor, he may be able to prescribe it (and save you some bucks).
Tried it
Yep I've tried that one, at the recommendation of a doctor. It seemed to work for a while, but like so many things I've tried it stopped after a few months.

Lawn work
I loath weed whackers and lawn mowers. Why can't people do what I do, and let their grass die?
There is always the ball-peen hammer approach. Administer with care. If you have a significant other they may be willing to help.
Mentioning this only 'cause you didn't
You may have tried this and just not mentioned it.
I have found a noise generator to be useful. There are machines that do this. I found an app that plays a selection of sounds that help distract and aid in sleeping. Usually, I can't sleep because I can't get my mind off of something.
Before that, I would watch sub-titled anime. That will also tend to put me out.
Insomnia is tough to combat. I hope you find something that works.

Well, FWIW,
"Talk to your Dr. about **trazodone**." I've taken it to help me sleep for 25 yrs. I've never needed to increase the dose. It's not a CNS depressant, in fact it's an antidepressant. I don't think I ever felt an antidepressant effect from it, it just knocks me out.
I don't know that it will help, but everybody that I know who has tried it, agrees that it makes them sleepy and/or knocks them out.

I love my insomnia!
I normally wake about 4am, and like you I have my best ideas then. But I enjoy using the peace and quiet to develop them.
I always have my iPhone next to the bed, and with DocsToGo it's easy to continue writing my stories. After maybe an hour or two of peaceful writing, I fall asleep again.
