Which probably is why she has gone back into an anxious state, shaking, barely able to talk.

There is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to grieve, and there is no 'timetable'. Almost anything can prompt us into Remembering ... Each of us will mourn each loss differently ... The pain usually lessens over time.
I still grieve my Domino-Kitty, and many others; I had to help put her paws on the Rainbow Bridge maybe a decade ago.

Someday, when Sam's heart-mind-soul is ready, there will be another Companion to be rescued from a shelter and to be loved. The new Companion is not a 'Replacement' or a 'Betrayal' of the lost one; no more than is a 'new' child coming into a family.
