I had a meltdown of sorts about 20 minutes ago.

we were going to put the car through a wash, and while trying to reach the buttons to put in our code, I knocked off my glasses.

I was too close to stand to get out of the car, and didn't dare try moving it in case I destroyed my glasses.

So I sat there shaking, until mom was able to retrieve my glasses.

Very Rational

Car Washes are in themselves very scary. Almost complete loss of control.

However, your decision to sit until someone could retrieve your glasses was probably the best thing to do.

You got it right on the first try ...

... "Freeze" and ask for help. Best move you had.

I've had things go AWOL in the 'bottomless pit" of a car's foot-well.

The way cars, and our bodies, are built, it is indeed quite hard for most people in the driver's seat to get our hands down to our feet and grab something.

And the legit worry of breaking your glasses, a loss of control of the situation, and a lesser concerns of looking ... 'whatever' to anyone waiting behind...

Minus corrective lenses, I am close to legally blind. With glasses, no problems. I take the precaution of keeping my previous glasses in the car. Prescription not quite right? Scratched up? Looks ugly? ... At least I will get home with 'acceptable' safety.

That's paid off. One day I was driving, and a lens simply, without provocation, fell out of the frame ... That was not-fun, driving one-eyed until I could stop and get the spare pair from the glove box.

My usual "prescription", of course: Take some deep breaths, have some tea.

In the words of a fairly famous Buddhist teacher: "Relax. Nothing is under control."
