so last night I dreamed I had to protect this house from magical assault, and after driving off several enemies, the last attack seemed to sap the will of the people living in the house, making them give up.

Faced with this, I fled.

I know its just a dream, but I woke feeling like I had let them down..

The dream, and the people in the ...

... house, are even less substantial than "bubbles in the Ganges".

All were just your brain doing nightly housekeeping, and 'should not' have bothered you, no more than our kidneys "should bother" us with what they're doing.

Important thing, though. You care about people. If you did not care, you would not have tried to defend them, nor felt bad that they fell to the attack.

You were asleep, and so your resources were less available.

Now that you are awake, your magic/mojo/manna is immeasurably greater. You can apologize to those people, and tell the bad magic thingy to Go Away and Stay Away.

If the bad thingy dares to come again, you are now trained and ready for it.

Hit the Break Room, have a cuppa, grab some hugs. By the way - that was me who smashed the cash acceptor and hot-wired the Hugs Dispenser to dispense for free. :)
