I had know that Thailand did the most operations. What surpried me was that Iran came second. This is not due Iran being a "go to" place for operations. It's due to gay men having to claim to be transexual to avoid prosecution or even execution.

The leader of Iran's Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa declaring sex reassignment surgery permissible for "diagnosed transsexuals". Eshaghian's documentary, Be Like Others, chronicles a number of stories of Iranian gay men who feel transitioning is the only way to avoid further persecution, jail, or execution. The head of Iran's main transsexual organization, Maryam Khatoon Molkara—who convinced Khomeini to issue the fatwa on transsexuality—confirmed that some people who undergo operations are gay rather than transsexual

Forced Sex Reassignment

I have always been interested in the Roman Empire and I wrote another story based on sex change and historical fact that you might like to read - "Proof for the Emperor" - https://bigclosetr.us/topshelf/fiction/85173/proof-emperor.

There was also a program of forced gender change which occurred in the South African military during the apartheid era (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Aversion_Project). I have not written about this one yet, but I did have a story plotted, and hope to get around to it.

P.S. Although it may be a topic in itself, I prefer "sex reassignment" because in my own case my gender is constant and surgery would only "reassign" my physical (sexual) appearance.

I called it sex change on here once and got told off. There are a few ways of putting it, some ways offend people in different ways. I have read most of your stories you mentioned. Stories based infact like that add something.
I heard about South Africa, I think it was the army? Couldn't find much on it though.

"Sex Change" in Thailand
I used Dr. Kamol in Bangkok in 2007 and looking on the Internet, he is still at it. There are operations done all over Thailand. Looking back, Medications given to me by the Oregon Psychological community are what triggered all that. Looking back, a divorce would have been sufficient. These days I live a peaceful, quiet life, hoping that my X found someone that could make her happy.

and Male Homosexuality was still illegal. Those times were like that. 40 or so years before that Oscal Wilde was jailed for that. That's when he wrote the ballad of reading jail.
History is littered with things that we now find embarrassing. We should not forget or even try to revert society to those days as is happening elsewhere but learn from those mistakes and become a better society.
It was at least 10 years before it became legal.
AFAIK, female homosexuality (aka lesbianism) was never illegal in the UK. It was thought that women would never stoop so low...

There is a false story going around that Queen Victoria wouldn't sign off female homosexuality as she never thought such a thing existed. it was never proposed.
In the UK only someone with a penis can be charged with rape.
1Rape. (1)A person (A) commits an offence if— (a)he intentionally penetrates the vagina, anus or mouth of another person (B) with his penis, (b)B does not consent to the penetration, and. (c)A does not reasonably believe that B consents.
So it probably goes along with that. It only counts if a man does it, they never considered women back then doing anything like that.

I had always believed that the UK was a bit more enlightened in their definition of rape. On the other hand, that explains the more horrible numbers of convictions.

That would still only be sexual assault (maximum 14 years) Rape can be a life sentence.
Old ways of thinking is a man cannot be raped as if he has an erection, he must want it. That's like saying a woman dressed in a certain way wants it. I remember in my early 20's getting unwanted erections all the time. You can't control it.
They were debating having misogyny as a hate crime, but not misandry in the UK recently. Equality should mean you have to do both. Feminists will say misandry doesn't exist.
I think TERFery should be a hate crime.

My understanding is that this practice was not uncommon (?)

When you first hear that Iran has that many gender confirmation? operations. You think, wow must be quite liberal. but really they are say.
