Okay, so Mike and Carol brought home a new cat from a rescue shelter a couple of weeks ago, and Mom and I wondered if she would get brave enough to come down and visit us.
A couple of days ago, we spotted her exploring our rooms, but she didn't seem interested in getting close to us.
That changed last night. I had knee pain, so I had taken a painkiller and was sitting at my computer waiting for it to kick in when the new cat (Who is totally black and named Lucy) decided to investigate the cubby under my desk, and then when I went to my room, she followed me, and after checking out my closet she jumped on my bed and sat between my legs.
I think our very small panther has claimed me . . .

Cats
are often a good judge of character. Kitty felt safe with you, and I bet you've made a friend for life. Despite all the jokes about cats owning people I'm not sure they think in abstract concepts like who owns who. To me it's more likely a matter of vibes and emotions, or you remind her of her mom. There's nothing more soothing than falling asleep with a cat curled up purring beside your pillow. Nothing more adorable than when they cross their front paws and do the stretching thing on waking up. I miss that.

I am usually a dog person, as I have 3 that are my constant companions. I have one cat though, who has decided that I am hers, or she is mine -- however she truly feels about it, and I have a nice, very new, leather office chair that bears the marks of our friendship. She likes to jump on the back of the chair and sit there, behind my head when I'm typing. Perhaps I should say she kneads to sit there when I'm typing? Thankfully, she doesn't claw my bed, or at least its not made out of leather to show the marks.
Cats are wonderful creatures and I love the softness of their fur when they decide you're worth the time and effort of a cuddle.
I hope your companion gives you lots of kitty lovin!

Me too, well sort of...
Not a lot of small animals around my place other than birds. I attribute this to the birds around the house, Owls, Falcons, Hawks and bald eagles are quite abundant. Not sure if an Eagle would carry off a house cat or not? But there aren't any around.
So I found it quite surprising when I woke late one night to the sound of a cat last summer really carrying on outside yowling really loud over and over. Grabbing a flashlight I went outside to see what was wrong with a cat yowling like that. Long story short, I found a mountain lion sitting on my porch. Stood and talked to her for a small bit, asking her to keep it down so I could sleep and if possible if she could head on back up the hill into the woods where she belonged. After a bit she got up, stretched and took off toward the woods.
Every once in a while I catch a glimpse of her, or see her tracks in the mud after a rain shower.
We the willing, led by the unsure. Have been doing so much with so little for so long,

A California friend told me that she'd sometimes hear a substantial 'thump' on her roof. It was a mountain lion arriving via a tree, wanting to curl up around the warmth of her fireplace chimney!
Quite a few predators would be able to 'take' a house-cat: coyote, large raptors, maybe raccoons; also motor vehicles. Inside-only is best for our (feline) Companions, or outside, leashed and continuously supervised.
I'm in the Chicago (USA) metro area, with an estimated 1.500 coyotes in the central business district. Coyote sightings in suburbia are so common, that one suburb's official newsletter told us how to "harass" (drive away) a coyote if we met one!
Coyotes and just about everything else was were here first - humans are the invasive species ...
