Sometimes you are just too close to get through. Too caught up in what going on to find the right words. That's why we need a support group.
Your mother has you there most of the time, but then when you need back up, there's Mike and Carol.
I don't think you really feel useless so much a frustrated because you couldn't get through to her.

when a crisis arrives, you're likely already spent from the heavy lifting in her care when things are calmer. Think of it as the person who does all the work in opening the lid on a stubborn jar only to see someone calmly twist off the cap. You've borne the lion's share of her care, and it's taking its toll. You are NOT useless - her situation would have gotten much worse if not for the loving care you've provided.
