Not sure what is going on. I've lost a few files, one that I was ready to publish. My screen print size is gone round the bend, so it looks like it is time to switch machines.

HP

I'm very happy with my HP Notebook I got it at Best Buy last September. They will match the best price and will still do it for two weeks if they put it on sale. I would suggest if you like extended warranty plans, I found that HP's was much better and cheaper than what was offered by Best Buy.

Feel free to comment or PM to me if you want any advice..

Good Luck

HP????

I seem to recall that Gwen's current PC is an HP All-In-One so she might be a tad reluctant to get another one.

IMHO, the problem is that around 86% of devices are shipped with that thing called Windows 10 on them. Again, IMHO, Gwen is suffering from a Software problem.
Around 10% are Apple Mac's and the rest are Chromebooks.
Chromebooks are nothing more than a 'spy-in-the-home' for google.
And although I've been using Mac's for 10+ years, I know that they are not for everyone. I use one everyday for all my writing. I wouldn't go back to Windows even if you paid me the entirety of BCTS's debt. I spent far too many years developing software for Windows to want to go back.

If I didn't live a whole continent and a big ocean away from Gwen I'd give her some help but at the moment I can't.

Oh, and the problem with Big Box stores like Best Buy is that the moment you walk in, some spotty nodes kid will want to sell you the device that they will make the biggest commission on. That device is more than likely EOL already and the manager wants them out the store ASAP. Just be careful. Cavat Emptor and all that Jazz.

Best Buy

To the best of my knowledge (and research), Best Buy (in the USA at least) pays their employees salary and they do not get commissions on sales. However, the pay for most of the jobs, including technical support, runs between $10 and $13 per hour, which is very low for support jobs in the computer space. With such low pay, the job attracts students who need flexible hours but not experienced professionals.

Dell Inspiron Core i3 7th Generation

Dell Inspiron Core i3 7th Generation:

I bought this machine several months ago and it has just sat because of illness, business, and laziness.

The current issue is with a one TB portable hard drive that has sat and could be seven years old. I tried to retrieve a tale off of it that had been sitting on there for a while, and the first page was fine but after that it was all spread out, with some missing.

For the last 3 days, there has been a disturbance in the Force, and some sites have been crippled. Facebook has had issues, and even Amazon has been acting like a drunk with a hangover. I know you won't approve, but please don't punish me, I go to a site called Religious Forums that I think is out of the UK, and it was down for a while.

The noise locally is that hackers, Russian or not, have been disrupting things, and even putting paid trolls on to make life fun. I know that lots of you do not approve of my using Microslut, but I'm just not smart enough to run some obscure OS and make it all go putt putt. Regrettably, there is no sugar daddy to take care of me. :( Yes, there are password issues around of sufficient magnitude that I shut the machine clear down when I am not using it. I've got Malware Bytes, and Windows Defender. These days no one seems to recommend any virus company and I do not know why?

Gwen

So, I'll start this new machine up, though I am not at all sure that it will cure a damn thing.

There is a site with a forum

called Major geeks I have found it to be an invaluable technical resource over the decades. While their main focus is helping people fight malware damage. Their are many true experts who will patiently help you navigate the perils of modern computers. They also have a large library of software, guaranteed malware free!My avatar is"Its Wendy" with a pink/blue Ying Yang. They know me and my history, no one cares, which is as it should be.

When to buy or build a new computer?

First thing I'd like to say is that the issue you are having sounds like a software or operating system problem, not a hardware problem and would not need the computer replaced to fix the issue. But when should we replace that old computer?

Does your current computer do everything you need or want it to do?
Will repair costs be higher than replacement costs?
And lastly how old is your current computer and what are its hardware specifications? This has more to do with how long you can expect it to go without having other problems.

Without knowing what you have, I'd advise you to have someone look at it before going out and spending the money on a new one. of course first thing you should do is back up everything you do not wish to lose to a portable drive or google docs (personally I do both)

We the willing, led by the unsure. Have been doing so much with so little for so long,
We are now qualified to do anything with nothing.

I agree with it likely being a software problem

If you want real help, go for a machine, that will happily run Windows ten and a version Ubuntu (Linux) on a dual boot. You need to partition the hard drive, that you do best from a bootable USB stick. Reduce the windows partition first, create a new one, make it bootable and install ubuntu. It runs Libre Office preferably and that is free of charge, open source and supported by a large community. It reads and writes word format, produces PDFs and generally does anything a normal person might want.

It is quite possible, that with the guidance of an ubuntu user, you'll be perfectly able to save everything on your old machine and get rid of Mocroshit win-doof 10 (German for dumb, silly) in the end.

My Indian friend is a python-django developer and she has alway sworn on Ubuntu.

Love,
Monique.

Ubuntu

I’ve recently started experimenting with Linux again, with it being immune to most malware and viruses floating around now.

I still use a win10 machine for games, if it wasn’t for that I would go over to Ubuntu full time, I’ve put it on a couple of the spare computers, the most effortless operating system install I’ve ever done, I literally installed it on a computer while I was getting ready for work one morning.

I talked the wife into using a Mac Mini to pay the bills on and do our online banking, to reduce the risk of identity theft. She is just now getting used to it, doesn’t care for Mac’s at all. Not a computer person, even though she has to use one at work every day.

I really like Ubuntu, but it does help to have some computer skills when things go south, there can be issues with some hardware and fixing them is beyond the average windows user.

Win updates can cause terror with computers

BarbieLee's picture

Did you check and see if you had a Win auto update? Go online and see if the latest MS updates are crashing other people's computers.

If not go into your comp control panel check the restore dates and go to the last restore date when your computer was behaving. Tell your computer to restore to that date.

I'll bet a Dr Pepper on anything because win or lose we are drinking.....

Let me know if I'm buying or not.

I'm also betting you didn't lose anything.
If your reliably always there for you power company glitched and your computer coughed, the files were never saved as such. BUT most likely they will be in "temp" file. And if you like you can go pick up a free program off the web to read those temp files because MS doesn't include that in their system.
Go through your temp files and retrieve your stories that were lost.

I know, a big pain in the .... trying to make things behave. And yes the girls were right about sometimes MS just wants to go bottom up for no reason and screw up everything one has done. Lots of luck loading Umbunta, I thought I was computer literate and I never managed to download all the files and gif and other things necessary to get that puppy installed. They certainly don't want outsiders using their program!
