Well, thanks to my own bad choices and laziness there is a good possibility that I will cheat myself out of four thousand dollars.
See, way back when I started with Walmart, I got a little bit of Walmart stock given to me by the company. When I stopped working for them I was supposed to get a payout - about 4 thousand dollars.
But due to a mix-up, they sent me a check - in the name of Dorothy.
Which isn't my legal name yet.
Which meant I couldn't cash the check
i have to try and get a hold of the company that ran the benefits package for Walmart, and hope like heck I can get this straightened out.
I'm extremely disappointed with myself, because this could have been avoided by my taking care of my name change when I had the chance.
So not my best day.

Procedural Issue
Best of luck. If I understand it, the check's intended for you so that it's still yours to cash or deposit. On the other hand, there's the procedural issue of actually proving it's really yours if your checking account is under a different name. I hope that you can work things out.

you sure
I suspect there is a good chance you can deposit the check with no problem. Dorothy is an AKA (also known as) for you. It is your money and no one else gains by denying it to you.
deposit it!
my mother worked for a bank for years ---they don't check that check! lol
just drop it into the ATM and I bet i goes through with no issues!
if they even 'look' sideways at you? get in their face and mention--lawsuit and LBGT rights---and they will run!
but in case, its really your check and you are---you?

Hi there. This may seem silly but..
Do you have a 'carry letter' say you are transitioning?
Take it to the bank. Show it to someone and cash the cheque.
Dayna.
ps. and spend the money on a name change!!!

I wish you luck take care
She's Canadian, Actually...
I think in the U.S. you could simply sign both names in the endorsement field (the one on the check and the one on the account) and deposit it, assuming the last name's the same.
