Morpeth Evelyn McEuan was a hugely built blacksmith. His wife had died not long after his youngest child Evelyn was born. Evelyn had three older brothers who were all small and pretty. Their father abused his sons mercilessly to toughen them up because he wanted an heir to take over his anvil. Eventually the three oldest brothers no longer able to take their father’s brutality left together and went to the city fifty miles away. The three sisters kept in contact with Evelyn, but eventually they all married. One married a widower with children, another a divorcee with children and the youngest and her husband adopted four orphans.

Evelyn had alway been considered a male name that only recently had been given to a few girls, and given that at twelve Evelyn was almost as big as Morpeth it was no surprise that despite claiming to be a girl she too was believed to be trans. It was said hormones had enabled her inheritance, a huge bosom and backside like her mother’s. Morpeth had tried to persuade one of his nephews to apprentice to his anvil, but given his strength and bad temper none were interested. By the time Morpeth discovered that Evelyn had become an excellent smith by watching him during the day and working his anvil when he was drunk after he’d finished work, she was fourteen, a head taller and several stones [a stone is 14 pounds or 6.4Kg ] heavier than himself. He only tried to strike her once. When she had carefully put the seven pound [3.5Kg] sledge hammer down before hitting him just once with her fist, which had laid him out cold for several hours, he’d been too terrified to attempt hurting her again.

Evelyn too left home, not for the city like her sisters, but for a village like whence she came that had an empty smithy needing a smith, for the old man had died childless with no apprentices. The village needed a smith, so she was welcomed and many a young man tried to court her, for a woman with a high earning craft and her figure was considered highly desirable as a wife. However, the gossip caught up with her, and her new neighbours had her as trans too. As a result the young courtiers disappeared. When Beth who was small and pretty and taught at the school moved in with Evelyn it was seen as some kind of redemption by her neighbours. It was assumed that Evelyn was sleeping with Beth and would eventually get her pregnant.

After a long tiring day for Evelyn at home rather than the anvil, Beth said. “I guess that will let the cat out of the bag about both of us, Evelyn, but there was no need to go over the top like that just to rub noses in the facts. I’ll fetch you another couple of pillows because it would reduce the noise in here considerably if you could tandem nurse.”
