Tip of the Iceberg
Thanks Erin. Those are good tips.
I have a book I'd like to recommend. It's called Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. My writing might be dreck but it has improved immensely since I've read that book.

Find a good editor
A fresh view is always a good thing; if you're very close, your field of view is narrow and you sometimes hang on to stuff that you shouldn't.
A good editor can be brutal, but harsh pruning can vastly improve both a story and your own writing ability.
As my dad used to say: always listen to advice; you don't always have to take it but at least it could help you to make a better decision.
