wondering how the good story link works, in firefox and not logged in i get a short error blip than nothing

Sounds like you have javascript turned off. I can't be sure without more information but the Kudos button does work in Firefox, Safari and Chrome.

I use Firefox 3.6.14 and I've found that the problem you're seeing is due to not being logged in. Apparently, you can't vote for a story (Kudo) unless you're logged in, and you can't vote for a story more than once (prevents ballot stuffing). If Java is turned off (or, if you have No Scripts running and you don't accept any scripts on Big Closet), you can't log in.
